We're live from MWC 2013 in Barcelona!

We've arrived in Catalonia's capital city, where snow, apparently, has marked the start of this year's Mobile World Congress. That's right, the hills surrounding this typically warm Mediterranean metropolis have been blanketed in a thin layer of flurries, but we're nonetheless optimistic about this week's smartphone show in Barcelona. As MWC 2013's massive new venue begins to take shape, we're preparing to deliver the hottest hands-ons, directly from Fira Gran Via. Some manufacturers, such as HTC and LG, have already demoed their latest handsets, and other devices have made an early debut, but there's plenty of excitement still to come, as you'll discover in our show preview. We'll be sharing our liveblog lineup in a few hours -- for now, it's time to bookmark our event page, and check back often throughout the next week.

Robert M. Stuart, Jr., head of middle market commercial banking and Louisiana State President for Capital One Bank, has been selected for induction into the LSU E. J. Ourso College of Business Hall of Distinction.?

Stuart and two other members that comprise the 2013 Hall of Distinction class will be inducted March 22, at a ceremony to be held at the Business Education Complex, the new home of the E. J. Ourso College. Selection into the Hall of Distinction is the E. J. Ourso College of Business? highest honor for alumni and friends of the college. Inductees are recognized for their business, academic, government and community contributions. The Hall of Distinction was established in 1996.

?Rob has provided invaluable input as a member of our Dean?s Advisory Council,? said E. J. Ourso College Dean Richard D. White, Jr. ?His accomplishments and his civic contributions to the business community more than qualify him for induction into the Hall of Distinction.?

Stuart, who joined Capital One in 2005 following the company?s acquisition of Hibernia Corporation, has more than 30 years of banking experience.

Before being appointed to his current position, he was responsible for leading Capital One Bank?s middle market commercial banking business in Louisiana and Texas.

Ronda Rousey wins historic women's UFC debut

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) ? Ronda Rousey and Liz Carmouche made history just by stepping into the UFC cage. When Rousey recorded another savage victory with her signature move, she demonstrated why she could be a trailblazer in women's sports for years to come.

Rousey won the UFC's first women's bout Saturday night, beating Carmouche on an armbar with 11 seconds left in the first round of their bantamweight title fight at UFC 157.

Rousey (7-0) defended her belt with her seemingly inevitable move, forcing Carmouche to tap out after bending back her arm. Rousey raised both arms in victory while flat on the canvas after the longest fight of the mixed martial artist's ascendant career.

"Is this real life right now? I'm not sure," said Rousey, a former judo star with just two years of pro MMA experience.

Former UFC champion Lyoto Machida counterpunched his way to a split decision over Dan Henderson on the undercard at Honda Center, and bantamweight Urijah Faber beat Ivan Menjivar with an acrobatic rear naked choke late in the first round.

But the sellout crowd largely showed up to see Rousey, whose unique combination of star power, athleticism and skill singlehandedly ended UFC President Dana White's long-standing disinterest in women's MMA. White even put Rousey and Carmouche in the main event of a pay-per-view show by the sport's dominant promotion.

Rousey was awarded the equivalent of the bantamweight belt she won in the now-defunct Strikeforce before her first UFC fight, but quickly showed she deserved it.

"I was actually less nervous walking out than I was for some of my earlier fights," Rousey said. "I felt like the UFC champion, and I know how hard I am working. This was a wild ride, and I can't wait to get back in the octagon."

Rousey and Carmouche didn't disappoint in their pressure-packed debuts. Although Rousey was heavily favored, Carmouche (7-3) actually had Rousey in trouble early, nearly landing a rear naked choke while clinging to Rousey's back in the opening two minutes.

Rousey, who had never been seriously threatened in any previous bout, barely escaped the chokehold by getting her chin and mouth underneath Carmouche's arm. Rousey gradually imposed her will on the former Marine after that, rolling her across the canvas and finally getting side control on Carmouche before patiently separating her arms to land an armbar.

"That was the most vulnerable a position I've been in so far in my career," Rousey said. "That was pretty tight, that neck crank, and I was very happy to get out of it. She had the choke across my mouth and ... her forearm was pushing against my teeth. That can't have been any more fun for her than it was for me. Crazy sport we're in, huh?"

Rousey has won all seven of her professional MMA bouts and three amateur fights by armbar, a judo move that has dislocated at least two prior opponents' elbows.

"I had to learn to take my time in MMA, and I was just able to keep a clear head," said Rousey, who became the first American woman to win an Olympic judo medal in Beijing.

Rousey dealt with constant attention from media and fans in recent weeks, a function of her rising stardom in the UFC and the larger sports world. She said the pressure wasn't anything she couldn't handle.

"There's no amount of press that can save these girls from me," she said.

Carmouche earned a huge ovation from the sellout crowd for giving Rousey more trouble than she had ever faced.

"I thought I had it," said Carmouche, who served three tours of duty in Iraq. "Like everything else, you make a mistake, and it turns around."

Machida (19-3), the former light heavyweight champion, had lost three of his previous five bouts before edging Henderson (29-9) in a slow, technical fight. Machida used his typical elusiveness and unorthodox, karate-based techniques to pick away at Henderson.

Both fighters raised their arms in victory after the final horn, but Machida landed 68 percent of the fight's significant strikes, with a 23-8 advantage in head strikes.

Two judges favored Machida 29-28, while the third had Henderson winning 29-28.

"He's a very great opponent for me, and I have a lot of respect for him," Machida said while fans booed. "My strategy was to keep the fight standup, and I think I got it. I think I completely dominated the first round, second round, third round."

Faber (28-6) got his career back on track with an impressive victory over Menjivar (25-11). With his home-state crowd behind him, Faber took early control on the ground and then finished Menjivar by clinging to his back and wrapping both legs around his standing opponent, forcing Menjivar to tap out while on his feet with 26 seconds left in the opening round.

"Ivan is a very crafty veteran," Faber said. "I just attacked the neck. He let me hold on too long, and that was that."

Although Faber has a huge fan following for his years of success in other promotions, he was just 2-2 since moving to the UFC two years ago, dropping narrow decisions to bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz and Renan Barao.

Robbie Lawler stopped Josh Koscheck with 1:03 left in the first round with a series of strikes, earning the knockout of the night award in his first UFC fight since October 2004. Court McGee also beat Josh Neer by unanimous decision in his welterweight debut.

NY subject of prizewinning photo questions ethics

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) ? A man depicted in a prizewinning photography series about violence in the upstate New York city of Rochester says the essay misrepresented who he was, where he was and what he was doing at the time his picture was taken.

The dispute involves a portrait taken by Italian photographer Paolo Pellegrin, who shot it on assignment with the Magnum Photo agency last year as part of an in-depth look at a high-crime Rochester area known as the Crescent.

The black-and-white photo shows a tattooed man in a patriotic T-shirt carrying a rifle with an ammunition belt slung over his shoulder.

He appears to be standing sentry in deep shadows in front of a cinder-block wall.

The caption identifies him as "a former U.S. Marine Corps sniper with his weapon."

But the man in the picture, Shane Keller, tells the Democrat and Chronicle newspaper of Rochester that it was actually taken in his basement in Brighton, a relatively well-to-do suburb with low crime that is nowhere near the poor neighborhoods that were the subject of the photo essay.

Keller, who now lives in Pennsylvania, is an ex-Marine who served in Iraq, but he was a combat photographer there, and not a sniper.

And at the time the photo was taken, he was a student at the Rochester Institute of Technology, who was working as an assistant to the Magnum photographers.

"I don't have anything to do with any of those issues, drugs or gun violence," Keller told the newspaper.

In a response posted on the website of the National Press Photographer Association, Pellegrin said Keller "may have misspoken" about having been a sniper, or else he "may have misunderstood."

As for the erroneous captions indicating that the picture had been taken in the Crescent, Pellegrin said he believed the name was "a conceptual designation as much as a geographical one."

"Shane thinks he and his guns have nothing to do with violence in the Crescent. I disagree," Pellegrin wrote.

The Magnum photo series on Rochester has taken second-place awards in several international photo contests, including the 2012 World Press Photo contest announced Feb. 15.

The flu hit American workers hard in January

In a new study out Thursday from the Centers for Disease Control, the vaccine proved effective just over half of the time. And among seniors who are 65 years old and older, one of the most vulnerable populations, the vaccine only offered nine percent protection. NBC's Robert Bazell reports.

By Allison Linn, TODAY

That nasty flu season appears to have taken a toll on our productivity as well as our health.

More American workers called in sick in January than during any month in nearly five years, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said this week.

Nearly 2.9 million full-time workers only worked part-time during the week in which they were surveyed because of illness, injury or medical appointment, the BLS said. Also,?more than 1.2 million people were off work for the whole week they were surveyed because they were sick, the BLS said.

That?s the highest level of people calling in sick since February?2008, when 1.3 million people missed a full week of work and 3.3 million full-time workers only worked part-time because of illness.

The BLS noted that more people typically call in sick during the winter months, when seasonal illnesses such as cold and the flu are common. But this year appears to have been especially hard on Americans, and on workers.

The flu season got off to an early and aggressive start, but the good news is that it appears to have peaked in late January, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Still, experts warn that the flu could continue to circulate for months.

In addition, other bugs, such as common colds and the stomach flu, can keep workers from heading into the office.

For many workers, getting sick can literally be costly. There is no federal requirement that companies provide paid sick leave, although companies who are subject to the Family and Medical Leave Act requires unpaid sick leave.

About 66 percent of workers have access to paid sick leave, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Full-time workers are much more likely than part-time workers to have paid sick leave, according to the BLS.

Have you had to call in sick yet this season?

RIAA Still Mad At Google Over Pirate Links

RIAA Still Mad At Google Over Pirate Links

The RIAA is still mad at Google because they says that, after six months of the search giant "demoting" pirate sites, illegal downloads still outrank legitimate ones.

Following mounting pressure from international rightsholders, last year Google finally caved in and said it would start making ?pirate? sites more difficult for its users to find. But, according to the RIAA, this was a false promise. The music group says that sites for which Google receives thousands of DMCA notices still outrank legitimate services. To correct this problem the RIAA is now urging the search engine to "immediately make the necessary changes so its pledge becomes a reality."

Utica shale wells producing huge oil and gas yields for Chesapeake Energy

Chesapeake had drilled 184 wells, including 45 producing wells, in the Utica play as of Dec. 31.

Chesapeake Energy Co. (NYSE: CHK) is satisfied with results from its liquid-rich Utica shale wells in eastern Ohio, reports the Akron Beacon-Journal.

The Utica play ?will be solid for a lot of years to come,? company spokesman Steve Dixon said Thursday as the Oklahoma City-based company held an earnings call with analysts.

Chesapeake, the top shale gas driller in Ohio, is projecting what the industry calls ?estimated ultimate recovery? of 5 billion to 10 billion cubic feet of oil and gas equivalents from each well over its lifetime in its core area of Carroll and surrounding counties in eastern Ohio. That is significantly higher than what has been reported from wells drilled in the Marcellus shale play in Pennsylvania, the Beacon-Journal reported.

There also are Utica shale numbers in the press release that Chesapeake issued with its fourth quarter earnings report. Among them: The company had drilled 184 wells, including 45 producing wells, in the Utica play as of Dec. 31 and plans to operate 14 drilling rigs there this year.

Comcast to buy rest of NBC Universal from GE in $16.7 billion deal

(Reuters) - Comcast Corp clinched full control of NBC Universal for $16.7 billion on Tuesday, the latest in a series of deals that have taken the cable operator from humble roots in Tupelo, Mississippi, to Manhattan's iconic Rockerfeller Center.

The nation's largest cable operator unveiled plans on Tuesday to buy out General Electric Co's remaining 49 percent stake in the NBC Universal joint venture. That gives it full control of one of the industry's largest and most profitable stable of cable networks, as well as the NBC broadcast network with its recognizable peacock logo.

Combining properties such as USA Network, Universal Studios and more than 22 million cable subscribers, the deal completes a 50-year transformation for Comcast, which was founded by Chief Executive Officer Brian Roberts' father, Ralph, in 1963.

Comcast bought 51 percent of NBC Universal in 2011 after winning antitrust approval from the Justice Department. Tuesday's deal comes at least two years sooner than planned and creates a $39 billion business owed primarily to the success of marrying cable distribution with cable programming. The rational behind the deal differentiates Comcast from rivals such as Time Warner Cable Inc, which separated content from distribution.

"The reality is content has gotten stronger and stronger and safer and safer, so Comcast should be trading at a premium to the cable operators. They are an integrated media and entertainment company. They are not just a cable operator," said John Tinker, an analyst at Maxim Group.

In addition to the main deal, which pushed up Comcast shares about 7 percent in after hours trading, Comcast will also gain full control of the floors NBC uses at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City and CNBC's headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, for about $1.4 billion.

Comcast said it would fund the deal with $11.4 billion of cash on hand, $4 billion in senior unsecured notes to be issued to GE, $2 billion in credit facility borrowings and the issuance of $725 million in subsidiary preferred stock to GE.

"Given that media stocks have gone up quite a bit, it's a very attractive price, a fair price because we had a formula buyout," Roberts, who is also chairman of the company, said in an interview with Reuters.

Separately, Comcast said it would increase its dividend by 20 percent and it would buy back $2 billion in stock this year. GE also said it would accelerate its own share buy-back program to $10 billion this year.

"People may have their own opinions on whether it's good or bad strategically, but it doesn't leave any unanswered questions financially. For a transaction of this nature and this size, it's a relatively low-risk structure," Brean Capital analyst Todd Mitchell said.

Since reaching the deal to sell its majority stake in NBC Universal, GE officials have made clear they eventually planned to exit the entertainment business entirely. So the moves announced on Tuesday culminate a long-planned exit from the entertainment business.

Comcast shares rose to $41.75 after the market close from $38.97 in regular trading.

    LONG-HELD AMBITIONS

Comcast turned its attention to NBC after a failed $54 billion hostile takeover attempt of Walt Disney Co in 2004 that ultimately led to the resignation of that company's CEO, Michael Eisner, after more than 20 years on the job.

While Comcast held the title of the nation's leading cable operator by a wide margin, its status as a content player was always second tier, with middling networks such as E!, G4 and Golf forming the basis of its channel portfolio.

A source familiar with the situation said talks accelerated in July 2012 when NBC Universal sold its stake in A&E Television Networks for $3 billion. Comcast and GE were debating how to use the proceeds, with Comcast wanting to keep the cash in the company while GE wanted a dividend.

When it first bought NBC Universal, Comcast tread lightly, in part to smooth the way for regulatory approval. Among the concessions it offered to help seal the original deal was to adopt a hands-off policy towards the news division to ensure its independence, ensure diversity by agreeing to carry networks aimed at minority audiences and remove itself from management decisions regarding online video site Hulu. Comcast owns a passive stake in Hulu, with News Corp and Disney controlling the website's management.

Comcast also agreed to ?net neutrality' provisions to ensure traffic to competitor websites was not interfered with and to make NBC's programming available to other cable and satellite TV distributors on equal terms.

Because the Justice Department looked at the 2011 transaction, this one would not need to be investigated, said Richard Brosnick, an antitrust expert with law firm Butzel Long.

"The only way that the government would look further at this is if Comcast violated its consent decree," said Brosnick.

A source close to Comcast said the company did not anticipate it would be required to file for antitrust approval with either the Justice Department or the Federal Communications Commission.

Comcast has slowly but steadily replaced NBC's former regime with its own people since closing the deal. Steve Burke, the longtime top lieutenant to Roberts at Comcast, runs NBC Universal. Former CEO Jeff Zucker is gone. So too is former NBC Entertainment chief Jeff Gaspin and longtime sports producer Dick Ebersol, among others.

In February, Steve Capus announced he was leaving as head of NBC News. That decision, according to sources, was motivated in part by Comcast's installing one its executives, Patricia Fili-Krushel, into the newly created position of chairman of NBC Universal News Group and making Capus, along with CNBC president Mark Hoffman and MSNBC president Phil Griffin, report to her.

Indeed, the only executives that still remain from the old regime are the leaders of cable networks and Universal Studios head Ron Meyer, who ranks as the longest-serving movie studio chief in Hollywood. On the cable side, in addition to Hoffman and Griffin, Bonnie Hammer now runs all of NBC's entertainment-oriented cable networks and Lauren Zalaznick leads its digital operations. Bob Greenblatt, the former head of Showtime, now runs the NBC broadcast network and Mark Lazarus leads the sports division.

In addition to the GE deal, Comcast reported a 6 percent rise in fourth-quarter earnings on Tuesday. In its cable business, it lost a better-than-expected 7,000 net video customers. For the fourth quarter, NBC Universal's revenue rose 5 percent to $6.01 billion.

Morgan Stanley served as Comcast's financial adviser and Davis Polk & Wardell was its legal adviser. J.P. Morgan was financial adviser to GE and Weil, Gotshal & Manges was the legal adviser.

(This story was fixed to correct second-to-last line to show NBC Universal's revenue in the fourth quarter, and not the full year, was $6.01 billion)

Lakers beat Suns with 4 points from Kobe

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Just when the Los Angeles Lakers thought their season was fully saturated with weirdness, Kobe Bryant made one shot and committed eight turnovers in one of the worst games of his career ? and the Lakers still beat Phoenix.

Although the Lakers keep finding new ways to flummox their fans and themselves, they're also still finding ways to win.

Dwight Howard had 19 points and 18 rebounds, Antawn Jamison added 19 points, and the Lakers survived Bryant's bizarre four-point performance for their eighth victory in 11 games, 91-85 over the Suns on Tuesday night.

Even in this tumultuous season jam-packed with statistical oddities and high-profile failures, the Lakers' latest victory is a curiosity. Returning from a seven-game road trip, the Lakers hung on to win despite the fifth-leading scorer in NBA history, who had never played this many minutes (36) with just one field goal in his 17-season career.

Bryant didn't attempt a shot in the first half and scored his first basket with 2:13 to play, finishing 1 for 8 in his lowest-scoring game since Jan. 13, 2005, when he left a game against Cleveland after six minutes with an injury.

Yet after the win, he greeted his horrific statistics with a smile.

"I thought it was great, actually," Bryant said. "Obviously, scoring four points, going 1 for 8, that's not necessarily a recipe for success. ... But it's not about us as individuals. It's about what we can do to help the team."

Bryant counteracted his nine assists ? just one in the second half ? with a raft of turnovers, yet the Lakers survived against one of the NBA's worst teams with big plays from Howard, Steve Nash and Metta World Peace, who scored 17 points. Bryant finally got an 8-foot leaner to fall, keeping the Lakers in control.

"I guess every 17 years, he's allowed that," Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said. "I wouldn't be too tough on him. It was just one of those nights. He was trying too hard to get everybody else involved. You've got to walk the fine line, and he's way over the other line. ... Just write it off and get to the next one."

Los Angeles returned from its longest road trip of the season with its fourth straight home win, but Bryant ? the NBA's third-leading scorer this season ? took his recent propensity for playmaking to an uncomfortable extreme, particularly in the first half. Although he blamed the Suns' double-teams, Kobe even passed up fairly decent looks to force passes to his teammates on a few occasions, voluntarily removing his shooting skills from the Lakers' offense.

"I've been doing that since January, when I was trying to make the right play, keep everybody involved, and then I try to get going a little bit," Bryant said. "But they took away my post-ups to see if the other guys could beat us, or maybe if I'd get frustrated or force things a little bit, but I just took the double-teams and just tried to make the right play."

Along with Bryant's disappearing act, the Lakers won despite managing just nine points in the third quarter, their lowest-scoring period of the season. Bryant finally started shooting in the third quarter, but was just as inept as his teammates, missing all five of his attempts.

The Lakers didn't make a basket in the third quarter after World Peace's 3-pointer with 8:58 left, and Phoenix took its first lead late in the period despite its own poor shooting while the Lakers missed 16 of their 19 shots and went 9:21 without a basket.

Michael Beasley scored 18 points and Luis Scola had 15 for the Suns, who have lost eight of 10.

"We get so close, play so well in the third quarter and figure it out, and then we went away from it in the fourth quarter for some reason," said Jared Dudley, who scored 10 points.

Jodie Meeks' layup reclaimed the lead with 8:40 to play, and the Lakers kept that small advantage down the stretch.

The Lakers began their seven-game trip necessitated by the Grammy Awards with a 92-86 loss at Phoenix on Jan. 30, blowing a big second-half lead and losing Howard to the shoulder injury that still dogs him. The Suns were 1-5 since, including an embarrassing loss to Oklahoma City last Sunday.

"I wouldn't go that far to say that we held (Bryant) down, because he's a great player," Beasley said. "But we did what we wanted to do, as far as our assignments. We just didn't finish. It's a little frustrating. Our defense really hurt us tonight, except for the third quarter. In the first half and the fourth quarter, they got whatever they wanted on the weak side."

NOTES: F Earl Clark scored 11 points, but sat in favor of Jamison down the stretch. Clark played the Lakers' entire road trip with pain in his right foot, with the Lakers attributing it to inflammation or tendinitis. Clark says the pain reminded him of a stress fracture from his college career at Louisville, but he intends to play through it. ... Will Ferrell and Shaquille O'Neal watched the game from courtside seats underneath the basket on the Lakers' end of the floor. During a third-quarter timeout, Ferrell donned the red blazer worn by Staples Center security personnel and stood on the court. Later, he jokingly escorted O'Neal off the court.

UFC 160: Junior Dos Santos vs Alistair Overeem

Alistair Overeem vs Junior Dos Santos Official Fight [PROMO] (via Aaron Verdin)

Dana White recently stated that at UFC 160 they'd like to have the anticipated match up of strikers, Junior "Cigano" Dos Santos and Alistair "The Reem" Overeem. Fans have wanted to see this fight for a while now, since before Dos Santos lost his belt in decisive fashion to current UFC Heavyweight Champion, Cain Velasquez.

Overeem was recently KO'd in the 3rd round, by Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva who is now poised for a second shot at Velasquez in a title opportunity on the same card that Dos Santos and Overeem will be facing off on.

Dos Santos brings great takedown defense and quick, precise punches and a lot of power. Overeem is a K-1 Heavyweight Grand Prix champion and his striking credentials are unmatched in the current UFC Heavyweight division, he also has a lot of devastating power and great wrestling in reverse.

These two have spent months talking up the fight, the emotion will play a big factor, I feel.

Junior has the advantage in boxing and speed, as he's demonstrated in previous UFC bouts. Alistair is explosive and has more experience, coupled with his wide variety of striking options. Both have excellent takedown defense and are not likely to look for ground positions right off the get go anyways. Overeem however takes a slight advantage in grappling offense and is likely to use it if hurt early.

Junior Dos Santos needs to swarm Overeem and pick him apart with quick, crisp combinations to get the win. Alistair Overeem should use plenty of kicks to put Dos Santos off balance and perhaps secure takedowns if he feels he can't get the knockout. Both have had cardio issues in the past, and I'm sure they'll both be improving on that issue.

All and all I look forward to this fight more than the main event, Cain Velasquez vs Bigfoot Silva II.

Darth Scorpion Rules This Crazy Japan-Only Star Wars Game

Even if you?re a fan of Star Wars videogames, you might be missing out on the secret best one ever. On today?s episode of Game|Life Weekly, we play through a bit of Star Wars on the Famicom, the Japanese 8-bit game console that was the equivalent of our Nintendo Entertainment System.

Created by Pac-Man house Namco, this Japan-only 1987 release had gorgeous packaging that belied the fact that what was on the cartridge was completely crazypants, even by the loose standards of the day. Join us as we discover plot holes, bizarre twists and a lightsaber that both should not be there and does not work. It?s why we unironically named it one of Wired?s favorite Star Wars games.

Wired?s Star Wars special issue hits shelves this week.

GOP Plans to Blame Obama for Sequestration Cuts

    Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell

An important sign that the sequestration cuts are likely to take place at the beginning of next month is that members of Congress appear to be spending far more time on trying to assign the blame than on trying to find a way to get rid of them. The Republican leadership wants everyone to believe that the sequestration cuts were President Obama?s idea.

Last week Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell started his press release by noting that it was the President who first proposed the sequesters.

House Speaker John Boehner was even more direct in placing the blame solely on Obama, stating ?President Obama first proposed the sequester and insisted it become law. Republicans have twice voted to replace these arbitrary cuts with common-sense cuts and reforms that protect our national defense.?

But it was the National Republican Congressional Committee which so perfectly summed up the general message the GOP is using on twitter:

Even though the Republicans are oversimplifying how the sequestration idea came to be, this message could work for the simple reason that most Americans feels the buck stops at the White House. Normally, the President receives most of the blame or the credit for whatever happens, even for things the President has little control over.

    Carson-Newman is now a university
    February 11, 2013 05:08 EST

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- There's a name change for an East Tennessee higher education institution.

Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City became Carson-Newman University on Monday.

The Citizen Tribune (http://bit.ly/XX2s7s ) of Morristown reported there will be a semester-long celebration of the name change and what it signifies.

There will be sealing of a time capsule at 7 p.m. Monday in Gentry Auditorium. Student Government Association President Devin Gosnell said the university wants students a century from now to know what Carson-Newman College was.

The date of Feb. 11 was chosen for the name change because it was on that date in 1851 that the Baptist Educational Society of East Tennessee appointed William Rogers and C.C. Tipton to raise funds for the first building. Rogers was the college's first president. Classes began in September 1851.

CHICAGO (AP) ? Hundreds of mourners and dignitaries including first lady Michelle Obama packed the funeral Saturday for a Chicago honor student whose killing catapulted her into the nation's debate over gun violence.

Yet one speaker after another remembered 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton not so much as a symbol but as a best friend, an excellent student with dreams of going to college and a sometimes goofy girl with a bright smile and big personality. They said she was a typical teen who wanted to borrow her friends' clothes and who never left home without her lip gloss.

And to her mother, Pendleton was the daughter she tried to keep busy so she'd be beyond the reach of the seemingly endless gang violence in the nation's third-largest city.

"You don't know how hard this really is, and those of you who do know how hard this really is, I'm sorry. I'm sorry," Cleopatra Pendleton told the packed South Side church. "No mother, no father should ever have to experience this."

Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed Jan. 29 as she stood with friends at a park about a mile from President Barack Obama's Chicago home in the Kenwood neighborhood. Just days before, the band majorette was among the performers during events for Obama's inauguration. Police say Pendleton was an innocent victim in a gang-related shooting.

Michelle Obama met privately with the family and some of Pendleton's friends before the service.

Obama, who grew up on Chicago's South Side, then accompanied the girl's mother to the open casket at the front of the Greater Harvest Baptist Church. She put her arm around Cleopatra Pendleton and patted her back as the woman threw her head back and wailed.

Moments later, the hundreds in attendance rose to their feet to begin the service with a round of applause "to the strength of this family." The nearly four-hour funeral was punctuated with a choir singing hymns so triumphantly that at times the floor shook.

Some of Illinois' most recognizable politicians and clergy were in attendance, including Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush and the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

But Pendleton's family said they didn't want the day to be about politics.

None of the dignitaries spoke during the service. Instead, close friends, holding back tears, got up to remember her.

One said she felt Hadiya was "still here with us, whispering the answers in chemistry." Another said Pendleton always told her to do her best in school so they could go to college together. The captain of the King College Prep majorettes presented Cleopatra Pendleton with the girl's team jacket.

Still, the girl's death resonated with the city and beyond in a way other Chicago slayings have not.

Her godfather, Damon Stewart, said someone on Facebook had asked what made Pendleton's death more noteworthy than those of more than 40 people who had already been slain in Chicago this year ? many without so much as a mention in local newspapers. The response, he said, was obvious to him.

"She's important because all those other people who died are important," Stewart said. "She's important because all of those lives and voices of those families who were ignored, she now speaks for them. ... I don't believe in coincidence. God needed an angel. God needed to send somebody for us to change."

The Rev. Michael Pfleger, a prominent Chicago priest, said Pendleton was the face of an "epidemic of violence causing funeral processions around the country."

"Sisters and brothers, I beg you," he said. "We must become like Jesus. We must become the interrupters of funeral processions."

Police have said the shooting appears to be a case of mistaken identity involving gang members who believed the park, which is near Lake Michigan and north of the University of Chicago, was their territory. No charges have been filed.

Pendleton's death brought new attention to Chicago's homicide rate. It came in a January that was the city's deadliest in a decade. In 2012, Chicago recorded 506 homicides.

A glossy, eight-page funeral program included photos of Pendleton and details about her life, including her favorite foods ? cheeseburgers, fig cookies, Chinese and ice cream ? and the numerous school and church organizations she was involved in. The program also included a copy of a handwritten note from President Obama addressed to the girl's family.

"We know that no words from us can soothe the pain, but rest assured that we are praying for you, and that we will continue to work as hard as we can to end this senseless violence," it said.

Other dignitaries at the service included Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan and White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett ? all of whom are from Chicago.
