Dos Santos asks for another term

LUANDA :President Jose Eduardo dos Santos asked Angolans to give him five more years in power to further his drive to rebuild the country after its 27-year civil war, on the final day of election campaigning on Wednesday.

Dos Santos, already in office for more than 33 years, has campaigned on his MPLA party?s multi-billion-dollar drive to pour the nation?s oil wealth into building roads, schools and clinics to pull the nation from the ashes of war.

That oil wealth has also helped his family, particularly his daughter Isabel, assemble a business empire whose largesse was on full display in the carefully choreographed tribute to the man who dominates Angolan politics.

Speaking on a stage outside the country?s biggest stadium, he acknowledged the problems facing the country that has created one of the world?s fastest-growing economies but left the majority of its people in abject poverty.

Article continues below

?We know the challenges that Angola faces. We are a realistic, pragmatic party,? he told tens of thousands of cheering supporters for the People?s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA).

Dos Santos said he wanted ?everyone to feel part of the grand project to make Angola a prosperous and democratic country?.

He also urged private business to join government in creating jobs for young Angolans, in a country where more than half the population is under 18 and unemployment is at 30 per cent.

The rally was designed like a well-branded street carnival with jumbo screens, thumping music by local pop stars praising the party, and tens of thousands of people - mostly bused in for the party.

The event is his last campaign stop before Friday?s general elections, when the MPLA is expected to easily win. Thursday is a day of deliberation before the voting.

The opposition National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (Unita) held a far smaller event late Wednesday, gathering a few hundred supporters in the sprawling neighbourhood of Viana.

Unita leader Isaias Samakuva repeated his criticism of the elections preparations, and said he would seek a meeting with Dos Santos to find ways of resolving them.

?We are going to propose a conversation with the candidate and president... to one more time use dialogue to resolve this situation.?

Speaking alongside a banner reading ?united for change?, Samakuva said 2,000 of the party?s election monitors had yet to receive accreditation.

?Many Angolans? names don?t appear on the voter roll, and in many places the voter roll has not been released,? he said.

?We have come to the conclusion that the National Electoral Commission is not ready. The conditions don?t exist to ensure the minimum of an organised, transparent process.?

Unita is also facing a challenge from the Casa party, a breakaway formed by Abel Chivukuvuku along with a top MPLA figure, smaller opposition groups and key figures from civil society.

He?s heavily courted young voters with promises of jobs and better living conditions, issues that resonate with many who had little direct experience of war and now eye Luanda?s sparkling new skyscrapers with envy.

Angola?s last elections were judged overall as legitimate, but this time the voting will take place with far fewer observers. The European Union sent the biggest team last time, but only sent two technical experts this year due to the costs of working in Luanda, one of the world?s most expensive cities.

Civic groups are stepping in, but their abilities are limited in a country that keeps a tight lid on their activities.

Despite efforts to contain dissent, Dos Santos has been rattled by a series of protests since last year by young activists, not linked to any party, taking to the streets to demand jobs, housing, water and electricity.

The protests have been small and quickly repressed, but clearly unnerved a government that tolerates little public dissent. Security forces quickly squashed the demos, often beating the activists.

Young unemployed men at the Unita rally bemoaned their treatment at the hands of security forces, saying they just wanted to raise the issue of unemployment.

?The Chinese come here to work, and we have no jobs,? said Raul Mandela, 27.

WSJ: Amazon is building an ad-supported tablet Update: two new Kindle Fire tablets coming next week

WSJ: Amazon is building an ad-supported tablet

If you can't quite scrounge up the $200 it takes to buy a quality 7-inch slab these days, Amazon may have a solution for you: sell them your attention. According to the Wall Street Journal, the company plans to develop a ad-supported tablet that would display advertisements whenever the screen is turned on. Sound familiar? Like the ad-supported Kindle readers Amazon's already dabbled with, subsided tablets would ring in at a lower price tag then their ad-free counterparts. WSJ sources also mentioned that some versions of the device would be WiFi only, potentially lowering the price even further. No word yet, if you'll be able to buy yourself out of the ads later, of course.

Update: Care for a thicker plot? CNET is now reporting that Amazon will reveal two new Kindle Fire tablets next week -- an all new 7-inch wonder and a slightly reworked version of the original. While a brand new slab could be an obvious contender for the 7-inch tablet crown, a refreshed version of Amazon's original hardware could very well fit the ad-supported bill. Check out CNET's full report at the source link below.

The U.S. economy grew at a 1.7 percent annual rate in the April-June 2012 quarter, boosted by slightly stronger consumer spending and greater imports. (AP Photo/Charles Rex Arbogast)

(AP) ? The U.S. economy grew at a tepid 1.7 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter, suggesting growth will stay weak in the second half of the year.

Slightly stronger consumer spending and greater exports were the main reasons the Commerce Department reported Wednesday that growth was better than its initial estimate of 1.5 percent. Still, growth has slowed from the 2 percent annual rate in the January-March quarter and the 4.1 percent rate in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Economists expect only modest improvement in the second half of the year. Most believe the economy will keep growing, but at a subpar rate of around 2 percent.

"The economy was sluggish in the second quarter and the slight upward revision ... does nothing to change that picture," said John Ryding, an economist at RDQ Economics, in a note to clients.

The report was the government's second look at gross domestic product for the second quarter. GDP measures the country's total output of goods and services, from the purchase of restaurant meals to construction of highways and bridges. A third and final estimate of second-quarter growth will be released next month.

Growth at or below 2 percent is not enough to lower the unemployment rate, which was 8.3 percent in July. Most expect the unemployment rate to stay above 8 percent for the rest of this year.

A weak economy and high unemployment could hurt President Barack Obama re-election chances and bolster Mitt Romney's campaign. Republicans are in Tampa, Fla. this week to formally nominate Romney and have pointed to the dismal growth in making the case to elect their candidate.

Economist Robert Brusca said the various changes in the second estimate should be positive for growth going forward. He noted more consumer demand in the spring than previously thought, which drives 70 percent of economic growth. And he pointed to less restocking of shelves, which suggests businesses could replenish their stockpiles in the current quarter. Faster inventory growth increases factory production, which boosts growth.

But Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics, said the small revision to second-quarter growth "offers little comfort."

"We are already two months through the third quarter and more up-to-date figures show that the economy is still struggling," Dales said.

Slow growth could prompt the Federal Reserve to take greater steps to boost the economy when policymakers meet again on Sept. 12-13. In late July, Fed policymakers spoke with increased urgency about the need to provide more help for a weak U.S. economy.

Chairman Ben Bernanke could offer some clues Friday to what the Fed might announce when he speaks at a Fed conference in Jackson Hole, Wyo.

Some suspect the Fed will wait to see how the economy performed in August, especially after July's data was better than expected.

Employers created 163,000 jobs in July, the most since February. Consumers stepped up retail spending, factories produced more goods and the housing recovery continued with increases in both new and previously occupied homes.

The upward revision to second-quarter growth was largely because consumers spent at a slightly faster pace than first estimated. Consumer spending grew a 1.7 percent rate, better than the 1.5 percent initial estimated. Exports, which add to growth, were also stronger, growing at a 6 percent rate.

Government spending, which has been a drag on growth for the past two years, contracted again in the second quarter. But the decline at an annual rate of 0.9 percent was less than the initial estimated drop of 1.4 percent. That reflected a much smaller dip in defense spending than first estimated.

All of the changes boosted economic output by $6.5 billion more than previously estimated, leaving total GDP at $13.56 trillion, after adjusting for inflation, in the second quarter.

USA: GE Secures Credit Facility for Two Gas ... - LNG World News

GE Secures Credit Facility for Two Gas-Fired Plants

Demonstrating its energy market expertise, GE unit GE Energy Financial Services has served as lead arranger of an approximately $107 million senior secured credit facility for two Illinois gas-fired peaker plants, managed by Tenaska Capital Management, LLC (TCM), an affiliate of Tenaska, one of the largest U.S. independent power producers.

The transaction will allow TCM to refinance debt facilities for the plants, which use 12 GE 7EA gas turbines and are located in Crete and Manhattan.

GE Energy Financial Services? affiliate, GE Capital Markets, Inc., acted as sole lead arranger for the credit facilities?a four-year term loan and four-year revolver?and was joined by Credit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank, Helaba Landesbank Hessen-Th?ringen and Union Bank, N.A. Additional financial details were not disclosed.

The 656-megawatt Lincoln Generating Facility and 328-megawatt Crete Energy Venture Facility are owned by a private equity investment vehicle managed by TCM. Lincoln and Crete began commercial operations in June 2000 and May 2002 respectively. The facilities provide capacity to meet peak electricity demand in the PJM ComEd service territory.

?Our expertise in merchant power and ability to provide energy sponsors with substantial capital commitments sets us apart from our institutional competitors,? said Matt O?Connor, Managing Director at GE Energy Financial Services.

This transaction expands GE Energy Financial Services? and Tenaska?s relationship. In 2007, the GE unit provided $25 million in acquisition financing for the acquisition of the Lincoln and Crete power plants from affiliates of ArcLight Capital Partners LLC, DTE Energy Services Inc. and Tyr Capital, LLC.

As a lender to middle market companies, or businesses with revenues between $10 million and $1 billion, GE Capital is the largest lender in the United States. In 2011, GE Capital committed over $122 billion in middle market funding in North America.

GE Energy Financial Services holds equity investments in power projects with a combined capacity of 30 gigawatts, equivalent to the installed generating capacity of Norway. The GE unit offers flexible financial structures ranging from common and preferred equity to debt and acquisition finance.

Midlife fitness staves off chronic disease at end of life

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Being physically fit during your 30s, 40s, and 50s not only helps extend lifespan, but it also increases the chances of aging healthily, free from chronic illness, investigators at UT Southwestern Medical Center and The Cooper Institute have found.

For decades, research has shown that higher cardiorespiratory fitness levels lessen the risk of death, but it previously had been unknown just how much fitness might affect the burden of chronic disease in the most senior years -- a concept known as morbidity compression.

"We've determined that being fit is not just delaying the inevitable, but it is actually lowering the onset of chronic disease in the final years of life," said Dr. Jarett Berry, assistant professor of internal medicine and senior author of the study available online in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Researchers examined the patient data of 18,670 participants in the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study, research that contains more than 250,000 medical records maintained over a 40-year span. These data were linked with the patients' Medicare claims filed later in life from ages 70 to 85. Analyses during the latest study showed that when patients increased fitness levels by 20 percent in their midlife years, they decreased their chances of developing chronic diseases -- congestive heart failure, Alzheimer's disease, and colon cancer -- decades later by 20 percent.

"What sets this study apart is that it focuses on the relationship between midlife fitness and quality of life in later years. Fitter individuals aged well with fewer chronic illnesses to impact their quality of life," said Dr. Benjamin Willis of The Cooper Institute, first author on the study.

This positive effect continued until the end of life, with more-fit individuals living their final five years of life with fewer chronic diseases. The effects were the same in both men and women.

These data suggest that aerobic activities such as walking, jogging, or running translates not only into more years of life but also into higher quality years, compressing the burden of chronic illness into a shorter amount of time at the end of life, Dr. Berry said.

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), adults should get at least 2 ? hours of moderate to intense aerobic activity each week to ensure major heart and overall health benefits.

UT Southwestern has a partnership with The Cooper Institute, the preventive medicine research and educational nonprofit located at the Cooper Aerobics Center, to develop a joint scientific medical research program aimed at improving health and preventing a wide range of chronic diseases. One of the world's most extensive databases, the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study includes detailed information from clinic visits that has been collected since Dr. Kenneth Cooper founded the institute and clinic in 1970.

Other UT Southwestern researchers involved in the study include Dr. David Leonard, assistant professor of clinical sciences, and Ang Gao, a biostatistical consultant in internal medicine.

The study was funded with support from the NHLBI and the American Heart Association.

Recovery and Continuity: The Distinction

March 10th, 2012

In the past couple of years there have been a large number of natural disasters causing untold amounts of damage, setting numerous companies back years if not decades. There is not much we can do to keep away from these disasters, but we can be ready for them. Is your company ready?

Most firms have at least basic protection from emergencies and disasters in spot. The most common types of protection are insurance coverage, server and pc backup, and basic preparations as required by law. Even though these protective measures are regarded as adequate for most organizations, there is still an opportunity a disaster will strike, leaving your organization in the lurch.

In the current months and years an rising quantity of occurrences, such as the earthquake in Japan and flooding in Thailand, have caused widespread disruption to organizations. To counter this, two enterprise initiatives have risen to the forefront: Disaster Recovery (DR) and Organization Continuity Planning (BCP). In truth, these two terms have grow to be widespread buzzwords, a quick world wide web search returns more than 53 million hits on organization continuity alone. The difficulty is that many experts are unclear on what every truly is. It is essential to be clear on each topic and the basic actions to take to be prepared for any disaster.

What is a Business Continuity Plan (BCP)? BCP, initial noticed throughout the Y2K scare of the late 90s, is a program that covers the way an organization prepares for and maintains all critical organization functions. BC organizing is comprised of activities that make sure upkeep, stability, and recoverability of service before, throughout, and right after a disaster. The program is typically set up on a day-to-day basis, and covers the entire organization.

It is important to have a BCP for your organization due to the fact if some thing takes place and you cannot deliver to your buyers, they will go to an additional company.

What is Disaster Recovery? Disaster Recovery is regarded as a part of the overall continuity program that focuses on the technical side of the business, which includes components such as information backup and recovery. Feel of BCP as an umbrella and DR is under the umbrella if you do not have a disaster recovery strategy, the general umbrella is far more or much less useless.

What Must be in Your DR and BCP Plans? These plans both share a quantity of similarities, normally following the very same actions involving the exact same elements. Each plans must consist of:

An operational program for a quantity of disasters that could happen in your geographical location. The plans really should cover occurrences as tiny as personal computer hardware errors and as huge as enormous natural disasters.
A succession plan for you or your leading management.
Education for substitute employees on essential tasks.
Cross coaching of your staff on the fundamentals of diverse roles so they will be in a position to take over if require be.
A communication plan focused on diverse crises, such as approaches of communicating if networks are down.
Off-site meeting locations for staff and managers.
A concentrate on safety. Foster partnerships and communication with neighborhood and emergency response services: Fire, Police, National Guard, Search and Rescue. Ideally, all personnel really should at least know standard initial aid. If you have personnel who are volunteer members of neighborhood Emergency Response Services, ask them to be responsible for teams.
Daily plans to backup your Enterprise systems, along with education and testing of recovery of systems.
Training and testing of all staff to practice recovery activities in scenarios as realistic as possible.

It is crucial that you conduct typical tests of your systems and processes, and make adjustments as essential. Be conscious that your business is constantly altering and so should your Business Continuity and Disaster Recover Plans. With a cautiously ready and practiced program, your business should be ready to face a range of disasters with minimal downtime. With the start of the regular season only eight days away and no signs of any progress toward ending the lockout of the game officials, more players are talking but there?s still no evidence that the NFLPA will be taking any action.

?I?ve said before that on a scale of 1 to 10, I think this is a 12,? NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith told the New York Times.? ?With the regular season approaching, my level of concern is only increasing.?

While that concern undoubtedly won?t give rise to a player walkout, it?s somewhat surprising that the increasingly-litigious NFLPA hasn?t taken some type of legal action aimed at forcing the league to fix this.

Players generally have not affirmatively been speaking out.? The Times article from Sam Borden collects sound bites from various players who expressed concern in response to questions from the media.? Borden properly balanced things out with the league?s sound bites about the replacements doing a ?credible? job, with some refreshing candor.

?We will not come out and say they are without their warts, but we will say that we?ve seen improvement every week,? NFL V.P. of football operations Greg Anderson told the Times.? ?At the end of it, we are very confident that this group of current officials will be credible.?

Observers of the game generally are less confident.? If we assume that the NFL has hired the best of the best officials, the NFL necessarily will be using something less than the best of the best, if the best of the best are locked out.? Why play Russian Roulette with the safety of the players and the integrity of the game?

Of course, not everyone feels that way.? And it?s spawned what could be the first documented case of Yahoo-on-Yahoo crime.? Says Doug Farrar:? ?[T]he NFL?s replacement officials are turning the nation?s most popular and visible sport into a complete and utter joke.?? Says Jason Cole:? ?The argument that NFL owners are messing with the integrity of the game in their negotiation with the NFL Referees Association is laughable.?

Cole asks, ?When was the last time you went to a game and said, ?Boy, that officiating was great???

It happens roughly as often as anyone goes to a game and says the long-snapping or the holding was great.? The officials are part of the infrastructure that is supposed to exist in the background.? We shouldn?t applaud the officiating.? We shouldn?t notice it all.

The replacement officials are making us notice them, because they are making mistakes not only in the heat of the play but after the whistle is blown.? The stage is simply too big for many of them.? The challenge for the league remains getting them comfortable, quickly.? As folks who are used to maneuvering around smaller, slower players with dozens of fans in the stands, the replacements need to get past the awe that Maximus and company experienced when they walked into the Coliseum for the first time.

Through three weeks, the magnitude of the games continues to invade the brains of folks who should be able to get the spot right and mark of penalties correctly and not call a touchback on a punt when the ball clearly was downed in the field of play.? Our point continues to be that, regardless of who?s being unreasonable in the negotiations, the stewards of the game need to work this out.

That includes the locked-out officials.? If they truly care about the game, they?ll find a way bridge the divide.? And if the best offer the NFL has made ultimately isn?t good enough, they can always find another hobby for which they receive a ton of money.

Well, maybe they can?t.

Young South Koreans face jobless woes with 'graduate glut'

Song A-Hyun was once confident she would follow in her father's footsteps -- graduate from one of the nation's best universities, land a plum job at a top firm and enjoy a high-flying career.

But the 23-year-old's dreams have faded. Over the past year she has sent out more than 40 resumes ahead of her graduation this month -- only to be rejected every time.

A degree at the top women's university Ewha, a high grade point average of 3.7, a year-long stint in Hong Kong as an exchange student, flawless English skills and two internships were simply not enough.

"Everyone has a pretty good GPA, scores pretty well in English proficiency tests and has done one or two internships, so there may be nothing special in my resume," Song told AFP.

"I've worked really hard to get all these qualifications, though...the thing is, there are too many people like me and too few jobs for us."

Song is one of a growing number of highly-educated young South Koreans, who face grim job prospects amid a worsening graduate glut and slowing growth after decades of rapid development.

South Koreans' zeal for education has long been cited as a driver of its stellar rise from acute post-war poverty to global economic powerhouse.

Children and teenagers spend stressful childhoods cramming to get into prestigious universities -- or colleges of some kind, at least. This is seen as vital to prosperity, social standing and even marriage prospects.

The so-called SKY universities -- Seoul National University, Korea University and Yonsei -- are the most prestigious.

But given growing graduate joblessness, the government has launched a campaign to encourage more youngsters to bypass university or college. It is pushing more businesses to hire school-leavers.

About 72 percent of high-school graduates went on to college or university last year, slightly lower than a record 83.8 percent in 2008 but still one of the world's highest figures.

But desirable jobs are dwindling as rapid development gives way to a more measured peace and more youngsters shun small- or mid-sized companies offering lower pay.

President Lee Myung-Bak has repeatedly urged college students to lower their standards and seek jobs at lesser-known companies, and has adopted more programmes to support vocational high schools.

"The excessive 'education inflation' of our country is causing so many problems socially and economically," Lee said earlier this year.

He even proposed setting a hiring quota at government bodies for high-school graduates -- a measure intended to encourage more teenagers to seek work after school ends, instead of heading straight for college with no clear goal.

The official overall unemployment rate is low at around 3 percent, but the rate for those aged 25 to 29 is more than twice as high.

In the second quarter unemployed college or university graduates -- estimated to total 373,000 -- outnumbered jobless high-school graduates for the first time in more than 10 years.

Even at Seoul National University, nearly 30 percent of its Ph.D holders were jobless in 2011 compared to about 15 percent two years earlier.

Big-name firms, apparently responding to official prodding, are hiring or promising to hire more school-leavers and promoting them to higher positions.

Samsung this year hired some 700 high-school graduates for office jobs, in a rare move. SK Group vowed to fill 2,100 jobs -- 30 percent of new openings for this year -- with such applicants.

Other top firms like LG and Hyundai Motor unveiled a plan to hire high-school graduates in far greater numbers than previously.

"Having many people with advanced degrees is a good thing, but in this country, there are too many of them compared to the number of suitable jobs for them," Kim Hi-Sam, a researcher at the Korea Development Institute, told AFP.

"Conglomerates like Samsung, LG, or Hyundai account for only 10 percent of our job market...but ask any college students, they all say they deserve jobs at these top firms and nothing less."

The labour ministry, in a recent report, warned of a shortage of 500,000 jobs for college or university graduates by 2020 and an oversupply of 320,000 jobs available for high-school graduates.

It called for more efforts to prod youngsters to enter the job market early, to cut the number of colleges and to ease discrimination in pay and promotion against high-school graduates.

But for now, college graduates like Song are still desperate.

"If I have children, I'll never press them to go to college like my parents did. I'll tell them to find their real passion first instead of just following the pack," she said.

"But getting married and having children sounds like an impossible luxury right now...until I find a job."

Logitech teases new Ultimate Ears lineup, says it's bringing 'Power to the Music' on August 29th

Having most recently introduced products like its water-friendly K310 washable keyboard and that TV Cam HD, Logitech's now apparently prepping a fresh Ultimate Ears portfolio for all sound lovers out there. Via its UE page on Zuck's social network, the company's teasing a plethora of products with some rather suppressive shots that don't quite tell us what's on the other end, though we can slightly see new headphones and speakers will be the focus of the main 'Power to the Music' event in a couple of days -- or August 29th, to be exact. For now, it looks like we'll have to keep wondering, but you can get a better hint for what to expect by tapping on the Facebook link below.

[Thanks, Khaled]

DALLAS Aug. 27, 2012 Being physically fit during your 30s, 40s, and 50s not only helps extend lifespan, but it also increases the chances of aging healthily, free from chronic illness, investigators at UT Southwestern Medical Center and The Cooper Institute have found.

For decades, research has shown that higher cardiorespiratory fitness levels lessen the risk of death, but it previously had been unknown just how much fitness might affect the burden of chronic disease in the most senior years a concept known as morbidity compression.

Analyses during the latest study showed that when patients increased fitness levels by 20 percent in their midlife years, they decreased their chances of developing chronic diseases congestive heart failure, Alzheimer's disease, and colon cancer decades later by 20 percent.

Berry said.

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), adults should get at least 2 hours of moderate to intense aerobic activity each week to ensure major heart and overall health benefits.

NYPD gunfire injures 9 at Empire State Building

This photo posted to an Instagram account belonging to a person identified as mr_mookie, an eyewitness at the scene, shows a victim of a shooting being tended to by pedestrians outside the Empire State Building in New York, Friday, Aug. 24, 2012. The identity or condition of the victim was not immediately known. Law enforcement officials in New York City say at least four people have been shot outside the Empire State Building in violence that stemmed from a workplace dispute, and that the gunman has been killed by police. The shooting happened at about 9 a.m. Friday at 34th Street and Fifth Avenue. (AP Photo/mr_mookie via Instagram)

An unidentified woman is treated by emergency medical technicians inside an ambulance following a multiple shooting outside the Empire State Building, Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, in New York. At least four people were shot on Friday morning and the gunman was dead, New York City officials said. A witness said the gunman was firing indiscriminately. Police said as many as 10 people were injured, but it is unclear how many were hit by bullets. A law enforcement official said the shooting was related to a workplace dispute. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing. (AP Photo/Mark Lennihan)

(AP) ? The veteran patrolmen who opened fire on a gunman outside the Empire State Building had only an instant to react when he whirled around and pointed a .45-caliber pistol at them as they approached him from behind on a busy sidewalk.

Officer Craig Matthews shot seven times, and Officer Robert Sinishtaj fired nine times, police say. Neither had ever fired their weapons before on a patrol.

The volley of gunfire felled Jeffrey Johnson in just a few seconds and left nine other people bleeding on the sidewalk.

In the initial chaos Friday, it wasn't clear whether Johnson or the officers were responsible for the trail of the wounded. But based on ballistic and other evidence, "it appears that all nine of the victims were struck either by fragments or by bullets fired by police," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told reporters Saturday at a community event in Harlem.

Police officials have said the officers appeared to have no choice but to shoot Johnson, whose body had 10 bullet wounds in the chest, arms and legs.

Police determined that three people were struck by whole bullets ? two of which were removed from victims at the hospital ? and the rest were grazed "by fragments of some sort," Kelly said.

Two women with leg wounds and a man with a wound to his buttocks required surgery and remained hospitalized Saturday. They were listed in stable condition.

Both Matthews, 39, and Sinishtaj, 40, joined the nation's largest police department 15 years ago. The union representing the two officers didn't immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

The officers confronted Johnson as he walked down the street after gunning down a former co-worker on the sidewalk outside the office they once shared. The shooting happened as the neighborhood bustled with people arriving for work.

The gunman and his victim, Steve Ercolino, had a history of workplace squabbles before Johnson was laid off from their company, Hazan Import Corp., a year ago. At one point, the two men had grappled physically in an elevator.

A security videotape from the scene Friday shows several civilians ? including three sitting on a bench only a few feet away ? scattering as the officers opened fire.

IBM buys Kenexa for $1.3B in latest software deal

(AP) ? IBM is buying human resources management company Kenexa Corp. for about $1.3 billion, adding to its stable of cloud-based software.

The Monday announcement sent Kenexa's stock to the highest point since it began trading in mid-2005.

Kenexa's HR software is designed to help companies recruit workers and manage employees with the help of networking tools similar to the ones that connect people on Facebook and LinkedIn. The Wayne, Pa., company says it has more than 8,900 customers and employs about 2,800 workers. IBM said that it plans to continue to support Kenexa's clients while also giving them access to IBM's offerings.

The acquisition helps make the Armonk, N.Y., company more competitive with database maker Oracle Corp. and German business software maker SAP AG, said Rick Sherlund of Nomura Equity Research. Oracle and SAP have both recently been buying "cloud computing" companies. Such technology allows businesses to run software remotely rather than installing software in-house.

IBM is hoping to draw upon Kenexa's products and expertise to develop more social networking tools for corporate customers trying to foster better communication among their employees. Several other software makers also have recently snapped up services that make social networking services for companies. Microsoft Corp. is paying $1.2 billion for Yammer and Salesforce.com Inc. bought Buddy Media for $689 million. Oracle has bought at least three social software services so far this year.

Through the first half of this year, IBM had completed eight other acquisitions at a total cost of $2.2 billion.

IBM Corp. said that it will pay $46 per Kenexa share, a 42 percent premium to the company's Friday closing price of $32.39.

Kenexa has been struggling to make money for years. Since 2007, the company has posted losses totaling about $150 million. The company lost more than $4 million on revenue of $164 million during the first half of the year.

Kenexa stock jumped $13.46, or 41.5 percent, to $45.85 in Monday's afternoon trading. Earlier in the session the stock reached $45.93, its highest point since Kenexa started trading in June 2005. Shares had gained 21 percent this year.

IBM stock slipped $1.56 to $196.21.

Kenexa's board unanimously approved the deal, which is expected to close in the fourth quarter. It still needs approval from the company's shareholders and regulators.

I can never forget that day, which changed my life. It was 20 October 2011. Intraday trading was new concept for me. I was excited about trading in Stock market. It?s just been one week I had entered in Stock Market and I was trying to understand how to trade in Stock Market.

I always observe rushing my friend in cafeteria to finish his breakfast before 9.15 am (Time to start Indian Stock Market). He was young, Smart and Intelligent, he use to monitor stock market?s Update very closely and use to explain me? ?See this stock will definitely fall or will rise now?..? and to my surprise it use to happen most of the time.

I started thinking, why not I should open a demat account and use his talent and earn some extra four to five thousand per month. I had 1 lakh rupee in my saving account and opened a demat account with ICICI bank on 12th October 2011 and by 19th October my account was active to place Buy or Sell order in Stock Market for Intraday Trading, Future and Options and for delivery calls

I thought from 20th October I will start my trading, but unfortunately I was sick on that day and I could not go to office, I did Lakshmi Pooja in the morning and I decided to watch CNBC awaz & take advise from my friend over phone. I was not sure how to place a trade, I called my friend and he explained me over phone, by 10 am I got a call from my friend ? hey Raju, there is a stock named M and B switch listed today, you take a sell call on it at current market price, Hurry !!!?. He hanged up immediately, I could only note Stock name ?M and B switch gear? but I did not notice his other information. I read in books and had heard my father saying me all the time ?Little knowledge is always danger?, but I did never take his words sincerely.

I bought the stock at Current market Price,135 and I bought in margin because i was very confident on my friend?s suggestion and like every trader I also wanted to earn more :-) ),I traded for Stock worth 5 lakhs. After 10 minutes, my Friend called ?hey Raju, did you take Sell call on that stock, I said yes I took at 135?. Actually I did a mistake, he asked me to take sell call but I took Buy call on that stock because I did not know how to sell a stock. My father called me and asked me to get ready for medical checkup, I did not reveal about my trading to my father as he is totally against of Investing in stock market. He always use to suggest me to invest in LIC, do some Fixed Deposit or buy some Gold. That day I was not willing to move away from my computer screen. My friend has told me that, if stock falls we will be in profit and by the time i was about to leave for doctor, stock came down to 122 and I was very happy and Informed my friend that my father is insisting me to see doctor.

He assured me that he will keep me updated with the stock update. I was very excited that I have made Rs 13 profit on each share but I was not aware that I am actually in loss of Rs 13 per share as I had taken Buy call.

somehow I forgot my cell in front of my computer while leaving home for hospital, on the way I realized that I am not having my cell phone with me. Father saw me in tense and asked me if i am feeling uneasy. I could not reveal him anything and I had not stored my friend cell number in my diary to dial up from my father?s cell phone.

The M and B switch ? this stock fall down till 118 and then suddenly moved till 181, My friend was trying to reach me continuously to come out of the stock but he was not getting any response, finally My Mom lifted the call and she gave my father?s cell number to contact me.

My friend called me and asked me to exit from the stock as soon as possible, he told the stock moved to 200 and he lost nearly Rs 80,000. I was shocked; I cannot explain my situation in words. The worse thing was yet to happen, I was not aware of my demat account?s User Id, so that I could have asked my fried to login on my behalf.

I was shocked and lifeless, I was thinking of the plans I had for coming days. I was cursing myself for taking a decision to start trading. I had planned for my dream Bike that I wanted to buy, I remembered Rs 10,000 which i had to return to one of my friend and many more. My friend was trying to console me that the stock might slip sharply.

I called ICICI direct (demat) customer care and requested him to help me, they seemed helpless as I was not sure with my account related information, I asked them what will happen if i am not able to come out of the stock by my own, they said that demat account will sell/buy your stock by 3.15 pm automatically if traded in margin. (I had traded in margin.)
The stock was at Rs 330, by 3 Pm. My friend called me and said sorry, I understood I lost all my savings. I was praying to God for some miracle and was cursing me on taking decision to enter in intraday trading.

I reached home at 4 Pm and My friend was waiting for me at my home, I wanted to hit him hard but ? My mother tried to ask about my well being but i did not care of her word and made a quick move to start my computer. My friend asked me to check the balance.

IT WAS RS 12,76,000. I COULD NOT BELIEVE ON MY EYES AND IT FILLED WITH TEARS. TEARS OF HAPPINESS?My friend could not understand how can it be possible.
Stock market had surprised me
