Hurricane Sandy changes coastline in New Jersey

ScienceDaily (Nov. 8, 2012) ? On October 29, 2012, lives were changed forever along the shores of New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and in the two dozen United States affected by what meteorologists are calling Superstorm Sandy. The landscape of the East Coast was also changed, though no geologist would ever use the word "forever" when referring to the shape of a barrier island.

Two aerial photographs show a portion of the New Jersey coastal town of Mantoloking, just north of where Hurricane Sandy made landfall. Both photographs were taken by the Remote Sensing Division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The after image on October 31, 2012; the before image was acquired by the same group on March 18, 2007. The images were acquired from an altitude of roughly 7,500 feet, using a Trimble Digital Sensor System.

The Mantoloking Bridge cost roughly $25 million when it was opened in 2005 to replace a bridge built in 1938. After Sandy passed through on October 29, 2012, the bridge was covered in water, sand, and debris from houses; county officials closed it because they considered it unstable.

On the barrier island, entire blocks of houses along Route 35 (also called Ocean Boulevard) were damaged or completely washed away by the storm surge and wind. Fires raged in the town from natural gas lines that had ruptured and ignited. A new inlet was cut across the island, connected the Atlantic Ocean and the Jones Tide Pond.

Why would the mother of a Cottingham High School Pupil with red hair go to The HUll Daily Mail and why would the HUll Daily Mail feature these people in an article when the school uniform policy for Cottingham High School states "Please note for all students in years 7-11:-
Jewellery is not allowed, with the exception of one plain stud per ear and one ring on a finger. No other forms of body piercing are acceptable. If students have a piercing during the Summer holiday, this must be done in the first two weeks of the holiday to allow sufficient time for the piercing to heal for the student to return to school and follow the school?s jewellery policy in September. Necklaces and bracelets should not be worn.
Students should not have extreme haircuts e.g. Tram lines or designs cut into the hair, or hair colour e.g. green, bright red or purple etc."

This article in my opinion is just bad publicity for the school and one family's attempt at 2 minutes of fame. Does anyone agree / disagree??

??What do you think???

From the Editor's Desk: Sandy, Nexus and what's next

Phil Nickinson

"What's it going to be like?" That was the question my wife posed to me sometime around Sept. 13 or 14 in 2004, just a couple days before Hurricane Ivan thrashed this part of the Gulf Coast -- and just some 56 hours before we were to be married. The answer, unfortunately. People were going to lose their homes, I told her. People were going to die. Beaches would erode, heritage trees would fall, and the very makeup of this relatively quiet (if quirky) community would be changed for a long, long time, if not forever.

So it was with a heavy heart last week that I watched Hurricane Sandy blow into the Northeast. I knew what it was going to look like. Been there, done that.  It could have been worse. Much worse. A little more than a year after Hurricane Ivan, I sat in the newsroom, watching the AP photos start to roll in from Hurricane Katrina. Beyond heart-breaking.

These are very different times, though. Back in 2004-05 -- a couple years that saw an inordinate number of hurricanes hit the U.S. -- there was no Twitter. You couldn't upload to Youtube from your phone. Facebook was just a baby. The power went out, and the old-school FM radio (or maybe a TV with antenna) went on for a few hours. Being that unplugged was a blessing and a curse. For as quickly as we saw relief information shared following Sandy last week, so, too, did we see hoaxes spread. I wouldn't want to go back, though. To hell with the hoaxsters.

I really can't think of a worse way to document a storm than Instagram, though. Filters are a horrible idea for showing what it really looks like, to say nothing of the low resolution.

To the folks in New York and New Jersey and everywhere else affected by the storm: Stay safe. Stay patient. Help one another. When your power comes back on and life begins to return to normal, remember that someone else is still in the dark. Or has no home. Or lost a loved one. And you will get through it. This has all happened before, and it will happen again.

Oh, you were expecting some Nexus 4 talk?

When Sports Should Be Left For Later | Barcelona Football Blog

There is a generally accepted idea that group healing is important. Argentina in 2002 was reeling from economic devastation and there was a lot of talking going into the World Cup that a win by the?albiceleste could put the country back on track through some sort of cathartic party. Or something. Japan, the conventional wisdom went, would be aided in its recovery from the March 2011 tsunami if only their women could win that year?s World Cup. You?d have to ask the Japanese if that really did work.

This past week the eastern seaboard of the United States was hit by Hurricane Sandy. I blogged during the middle of it?and referenced some of the disaster that had befallen people here, but my glib mention of yoga and surfing the Internet was before the reality truly set in. And, to be honest, I?m not sure it really has. As of now, there are millions of people without electricity, running water, and access to basic needs like food and warmth. The temperature is going down, thirst is creeping in, and people are trapped in their apartment buildings by the lack of power. The Rockaways were devastated. Red Hook was submerged. Coney Island lost its boardwalk. And that?s just in Brooklyn. The Jersey Shore is almost nonexistent. North Carolina?s coastal highways are buckled into Dr. Seuss stairways that lead to nowhere.

And on Sunday, the New York City Marathon will go off as planned.

Take Staten Island: 90% without power, flooded basements, destroyed homes. There are reports (as of yet unverified, but making the rounds on Twitter and via network news?I heard it on CBS this afternoon) that hotels are kicking out people there to make room for marathoners with reservations. The city has set up generators and water stations while swaths of the city remain without power or access to that vital, liquid substance that will be doused on runners. There will be foil wraps and orange slices for the finishers while there will be long lines and handouts of batteries and candles for those lucky enough to live near relief centers.

And on Sunday, tens of thousands of men and women will run through all five boroughs for recreation.

Sure, if you look hard enough, you?ll find a few pictures out there of me cleaning up small businesses in Red Hook, Brooklyn, but the total hours of that volunteering (8 or so) is less than I?ve spent playing FIFA13 or sitting on barstools since Sandy came through.?I watched the disaster porn that is network TV news and Twitter for hours. Since Tuesday morning, I?ve cycled through hundreds of pictures of boats on streets and train tracks, lines at gas stations and food banks, and flooded subway stations. I?m getting paid to sit around and have a staycation.

My point is that I?m not a moral authority on anything and I certainly can?t point the finger at anyone for not helping on a personal level. The argument for the marathon is it will be cheering and a sense of normalcy. There will be hugging and crying and people running on costumes to remind us all that human spirit conquers adversity. Maybe the world will see what is really happening here and react accordingly. The marathon is a major charity event, with millions of dollars pouring into the coffers of various groups. We?ll be conquering so many things with this money.

Except, of course, that this rings hollow when the camera pans to the side and there?s a family hunkered down for the night against below freezing temperatures. The news coverage is 24/7 already. People have seen Atlantic City being overwhelmed, they looked at videos of the Breezy Point?s fire, and have gasp along with the workers going down into the subway for the first time. Most of us can pick the fake pictures on Twitter out from the real ones without batting an eye. What catharsis is the marathon or any sporting event going to provide that heat to an apartment building won?t? What will giving Gatorade to joggers do to help the family that lost their house and now have nowhere to stay? The generators they?re using for media tents could power 400 homes.

I don?t claim to know what it costs to cancel a marathon, but I also don?t claim to care. I know people train for months, sometimes years to run in the NYC marathon. I know some have traveled from around the world for this. I know the organizational intensity of these things because I?ve witnessed it first hand each of the last 4 years. But?no, I won?t be watching Bar?a-Celta tomorrow and I won?t be attending the marathon. Tomorrow, I?ll likely be knee-deep in someone?s basement tossing the rotting, destroyed remnants of their life to the curb or removing the walls of their tumbled homes from their streets so emergency vehicles can pass. People who need a place to shower and get some hot food will be at my house. Friends will be staying with us.

Sports heal us emotionally. Sports are cathartic when they?re not diverting police and emergency teams from those who are literally dying rather than cramping. Bloomberg says the city will remain uncowed by the hurricane and as such will ?fight through the pain? to pull off a road race that could easily be delayed a few weeks to allow for recovery efforts. It is unacceptable and it is unconscionable to continue with this plan.

Travelex Answers Coverage Questions For Hurricane Sandy | Travel ...

The following questions and answers regarding travel insurance coverage for Hurricane Sandy have been provided by Travelex:

In effort to insure that we all are on the same page as to how coverage applies to Travel Basic, Travel Select, & Travel Max plans for Hurricane Sandy we?ve taken the liberty to draft some proposed question you may be receiving from accounts and/or direct consumers. As usual benefits are always determined at the time of a claim and based off the documentation submitted.

For BSM plans, coverage available for loss related to Hurricane Sandy on policies purchased on October 24, 2012 or earlier.

Am I covered for Trip Cancellation/Trip Interruption on my current plan?

- Insured are eligible for TCTI benefits for the covered reasons under the TCTI benefit, if the policy was purchased on or prior to October 24, 2012. No coverage is afforded for the possibility of a storm affecting an insured?s travel, the loss must actually occur.

What if I experience a delay while traveling due to Hurricane Sandy, am I covered?

- Insured will be eligible for Trip Delay benefits (i.e. out-of-pocket expenses) if delayed for 5 or more hours by a common carrier as defined under our plans, provided the policy was purchased on or before October 24, 2012. Reimbursements included: cost incurred for additional meals, local transportation, and additional hotel accommodations up to plans specified benefit amounts for Trip Delay.

My original flight has been canceled due to Hurricane Sandy and my airline is advising that the next available flight won?t be for another week. Can I book a return flight home with a different provider and be protected for the cost of purchasing the new ticket?

- Travelers will be eligible for reimbursement on the additional transportation cost of the new air ticket to return home up to the maximum benefit amount under the Trip Interruption benefit specified by the plan type purchased.

What if the new flight is then canceled and/or delayed; would I still qualify for TCTI and/or TD benefits on the new loss??

- In the event the new flight is canceled and/or delayed in the above scenario, travelers will be eligible for reimbursement under TI benefits for any additional?transportation expenses incurred to catch up to the covered trip and/or to the final destination up to the maximum benefits amount specified by the plan type purchased. Under the Trip Delay benefits, if delayed for 5 or more hours due to a common carrier delay travelers would qualify for reimbursement on the additional cost incurred for meals, local transportation, and hotel accommodation up to the maximum benefit amount specified by plan type purchased.

My destination has been deemed uninhabitable; however my hotel accommodations remain open. Do I still have to go on the trip or do I qualify for Trip Cancellation benefits?

- Travelers should seek compensation from supplier first. Coverage will be considered under Trip Cancellation on the insured components for plans purchased on or before October 24, 2012 in the event a travelers destination is deem uninhabitable but their accommodation remain open.

If a traveler is notified that their airline cancelled their flight due to weather on the actual departure date, are they expected to join their trip?

- The expectation under our plans is for the traveler to still plan on traveling on the covered trip once travel has commenced.

If airline cancels flights on the day of departure and unable to get travelers to destinations in a reasonable timeframe (i.e. can?t get there until day 7 of their 10 day trip), are travelers still expected to go if insured under Travel Basic?

- Again the expectation under our plans is for the traveler to do their best to join the covered trip. In the event it?s not reasonable to expect a traveler to join the trip (For example, missing 7 days out of a 10 day trip) then coverage may be afforded for plans purchased on or before October 24, 2012.

If I used Frequent Flyer miles to purchase my airline ticket, am I protected if my flights are delayed and/or cancelled due to weather?

- Coverage will be afforded on the reissue fee incurred up to $200 per person to have the ticket reissued. In addition, if travelers over insured to protect themselves for the cost of an additional airline ticket if they experience a covered interruption, coverage would be afforded up to the maximum benefits amount under Trip Interruption as specified by the plan type purchased.

If my residence is located in the path of the Hurricane, am I eligible for TC benefits if purchased prior to the event occurring??

- Coverage is afforded only for covered reason specified by the plan type purchased, in the event an insured home is deemed uninhabitable due to the hurricane then coverage is afforded if purchased on or before October 24, 2012. Coverage is not afforded to those simply in the projected path of the hurricane.

To be eligible for the covered reason that states ?mandatory evacuation order by local authorities at destination due to hurricane?, what documentation would be required?

- This would apply to Travel Select and Travel Max plans only. Any documentation from the local government, policy, and/or state police obtained by travelers will suffice. In addition, insured can also submit internet and/or other news articles with their claim documentation. Hotels/Operators may also issue letters to their guest regarding the closure of the hotel/cancellation of the tour, which can also be submitted to support the claim. In general, claims will be researching and obtaining these documentations in advance to assist with claims reviews.

>> are beginning to feel the effects on north carolina 's outer banks . weather channel meteorologist julie martin joins us now from nags head . how are things there?

>> reporter: good evening, lester. things are definitely deteriorating in nags head . we are getting lashed with outer rain bands from sandy, even though it's still well offshore from the carolinas. just goes to show you the size and strength of this storm. the worst, however, is yet to come here in the outer banks . late tonight and overnight we are going to be dealing with tropical storm conditions, high winds , coastal flooding. possibly even power outages. most of the residents here have been through nor'easters, hurricanes and tropical systems many times. they have decided to ride it out. one man here told me a long time resident that he's not sure about this strange storm named sandy. he's not letting his guard down just yet. probably shouldn't do so. it's already been full of meteorological surprises for us, that's for sure. this is really just a taste of what's to come in the northeast and possibly worse. lester?

MANHASSET, NY The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research has been awarded a $1 million grant from the World Trade Center Health Program, which is administered by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), part of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Safety (NIOSH) to comprehensively study the overall physical, mental and socioeconomic impact of the World Trade Center (WTC) disaster on responders, as well as identify the linkage between socioeconomic status and health among all occupations of WTC responders.

The attacks on September 11, 2001, created hazardous environments and situations for first responders, community residents and those who helped in cleanup. Firefighters, police officers, construction workers, cleanup workers and others were exposed to airborne toxins and other physical and mental hazards.

"Previous health reports on World Trade Center responders after 9/11 have not made comparisons between the responders and the general population, nor have they comprehensively evaluated the changes of socioeconomic status in these WTC responders," noted Hyun Kim, ScD, investigator at the Feinstein Institute and the principal investigator of the study. "I am thankful that the NIOSH is supporting this investigation, as it will help to identify groups of responders who are at high risk of health issues and develop strategies for prevention and intervention. With successful completion of this two-year study, we expect a substantial improvement of the occupational health surveillance system for World Trade Center responders."

"Dr. Kim's work will complement the clinical work we do every day at the Queens WTC Clinical Center of Excellence, providing medical monitoring and treatment to the men and women who responded to Ground Zero after 9/11, and give us a greater understanding of the total impact of the WTC disaster on our WTC responder community," stated Dr. Jacqueline Moline, director of the Queens WTC Clinical Center of Excellence and vice president of Population Health for the North Shore-LIJ Health System.

The main objective of the proposed study is to establish an expanded occupational health surveillance system that summarizes overall health status of WTC responders over time, and also provides information about symptoms not previously reported. Through this work, it is possible that other health outcomes will be identified and reported, such as autoimmune disorders. The study will compared the health of WTC responders to that of the general population in US and New York-White Plains-Wayne, NY/NJ metropolitan area. Another objective of the study is to investigate the linkage between socioeconomic status and health status among these WTC responders. Lower socioeconomic status is an important potential consequence of WTC exposures that can negatively impact the physical and mental health status of WTC responders. Feinstein Institute researchers conducting the study say they hope the findings will not only identify new diseases and high-risk groups within the WTC responders being studied, but also aid in the future development of new guidelines for implementation of an occupational health surveillance system for disasters, which is essential for disaster preparedness.

Answers sought as $3B Texas cancer agency meets

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Texas put $3 billion on the table to prove it was serious about fighting cancer, but it will take more than money to convince scientists that's still the case.

Hundreds of the nation's top cancer researchers want answers and reassurance this week from the embattled Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, which is reeling after mass resignations and serious internal accusations that have put the nation's second-biggest pot of cancer research dollars in jeopardy.

The agency's annual conference begins Wednesday, with nearly 900 scientists and agency stakeholders expected to attend. Among the notables unlikely to show up: nearly three dozen renowned scientists, including a Nobel laureate, who severed ties with CPRIT this month over a controversial award.

Bill Gimson, the executive director of CPRIT since it was founded in 2007, is denying accusations that politics influence funding decisions as the agency hosts what is expected to be its largest annual conference yet. For three days, CPRIT officials will try to repair a once-celebrated image that was hailed as an unprecedented state-level effort to fight cancer.

"Obviously we will address issues that have surfaced," Gimson said. "I think, more importantly, we will reconfirm our commitment to a gold-standard peer review and picking the very best projects."

Thirty-three of the agency's scientific peer reviewers have recently resigned, many in protest. Nobel laureate Dr. Phillip Sharp, who headed the agency's scientific review council, wrote in a resignation letter this month that the agency is making funding decisions that carry a "suspicion of favoritism" in how the state hands out taxpayer dollars.

Others were more blunt: Dr. William Kaelin of Harvard Medical School, who also served on the council, accused the agency of "hucksterism."

The backlash stems from a $20 million commercialization grant awarded earlier this year for a so-called incubator project at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. It was among the largest grants in the agency's young history and was approved without a scientific review, leading the agency's chief scientific officer to step down.

"If I could do that one grant over again, I would do it differently," said Gimson, adding that the agency has since examined its review process.

Gimson said the agency is still searching for a new chief scientific officer and doesn't believe the criticism coming from within the medical community will hamper efforts to replace those who've resigned.

Agency officials at this week's meeting also are scheduled to discuss ? but take no formal action on ? proposed changes to how the state divvies up grant awards between research, prevention and commercialization efforts to bring new drugs to market. The agency has awarded nearly $700 million in grants since 2009, mostly to fund research.

The keynote speaker Wednesday is Dr. Brian Druker, the celebrated oncologist who developed the groundbreaking cancer drug Gleevec.

The conference runs through Friday.

Wacom Cintiq 22HD

The professional-grade Wacom Cintiq 22HD ($1,999 direct) carries on the company's tradition of offering the best PC- and Mac-based drawing surfaces on the planet. It's ideal for professional illustrators, cartoonists, graphic designers, and artists who prefer to sketch directly on the screen, instead of drawing on a gray tablet and having to look at a separate display while working. The Cintiq 22HD replaces the now-discontinued Cintiq 21UX as our Editors' Choice for interactive pen displays, thanks in part to the 22HD's improved LED-backlit display and wide-aspect ratio, but mainly because there's still nothing quite like a Wacom Cintiq display.

Product Lineup and Design
First, a word about where the Cintiq 22HD sits in Wacom's lineup. The higher-end Cintiq 24HD touch ($3,699 direct), aside from being two inches larger, also supports multi-touch, to allow for two-handed work with virtual paints, markers, and clay for 3D sculpting, modeling, and animation. With that display, you could zoom in or rotate a 3D model with one hand while sculpting or sketching with the other. It also has a counter-weighted stand for positioning over the edge of a desk or like an easel, and you can even pop up an on-screen keyboard for typing if needed.?Meanwhile, lower-end Wacom tablets like the excellent Intuos5 ?and budget-priced Bamboo Splash ?cater to midrange professionals and amateur illustrators alike, with much lower price points, though none of those double as an actual display.

The Cintiq 22HD measures 15.7 by 25.6 by 2.2 inches (HWD) and weighs 18.7 pounds with the stand attached. It's huge?it's much larger than the average 22-inch monitor, thanks to an oversize bezel and various hardware controls. That said, it's actually several pounds lighter than the Cintiq 21UX; credit improvements in LCD and touch screen technology. The thick display bezel is encased in a soft touch material that makes the tablet easy to work with, particularly the tapered edge along the bottom. On the back, you get hardwired DVI-H and USB cables, and there's also a DisplayPort connector that makes it easy to hook up recent Macs.?The Cintiq 22HD also works as a mirrored or extended display in conjunction with an additional monitor.

Metal Stand, Software Bundle, and Setup
Attaching the included metal stand only takes a few minutes, but you need to pay attention to the instructions?otherwise you could literally injure yourself with the release levers. Two Philips-head screws attach the stand to the back of the 22HD display panel. Once connected, you can position the Wacom Cintiq 22HD anywhere along a vertically tilting axis, from almost flush with the table, to standing almost straight up like an easel. The adjustments are smooth, tight, and accurate; the right lever controls upward movement, while the left lever controls downward movement; one locks while you move the other.

Aside from the main display and the metal stand, the package includes the Grip Pen and a small weighted pen stand (more on these two later). There's also a large AC adapter and power cord, plus two screws for the stand, several short printed manuals, and an installation DVD. The DVD only includes the driver software and PDF manual. In lieu of the separate software DVD Wacom included with the 21UX,?Wacom now offers a?great starting page?linking to free software downloads that come with the Cintiq 22HD, as well as a series of tutorial videos to get you started. You get full versions of Adobe Photoshop Elements 10, Autodesk Sketchbook Express, Nik Software Color Efex Pro 4 Select Edition, and Smith Micro Anime Studio, and there's a 90-day trial for Corel Painter 12.

You'll need either a Windows 7, Vista, or XP SP2 PC, or a Mac running OS X 10.4.8 or later in order to get started. I tested the Wacom Cintiq 22HD with a quad-core Xeon-based Mac Pro running OS X 10.7.5 Lion and Adobe Photoshop CS6. I installed the bundled CD, which downloaded the full user manual from Wacom's website. As prompted, I configured the tablet for right-handed use and connected the USB cable to the back of the Mac Pro. Next, I plugged in the unit's AC power adapter and connected it to the Mac as the main display. I also calibrated the display and started up Adobe Photoshop CS6. Voil??I was in business.

Savings tips for those living paycheck to paycheck

In a recent poll, voters named the economy and unemployment the two most important problems facing the country, as millions of Americans struggle to pay bills and save money at the same time. TODAY financial editor Jean Chatzky reports on an average American family's struggle to save.

By Jean Chatzky, TODAY

An hourglass figure may be desirable, but it?s not a good look for an economy.

?The middle is getting squeezed and people are moving up and moving down but staying in the middle is pretty difficult,? said David Kelly, an economist for JPMorgan Funds.

And this ?hourglass economy? is taken its toll on savings accounts.

About 49 percent of Americans say they are unable to contribute to a retirement plan, according to a survey conducted earlier this year by LIMRA, a financial services industry trade association.

But saving for retirement is not something to be ignored. You have to start somewhere. Here are four tips for those of you struggling to put money away for your golden years.

1. Save before you spend

If you're not doing it now, you have to find a way to save and the best thing you can do to help yourself is automate.? If the money lands in your checking account and you see it on your ATM receipt, it's too easy to find some "need" to spend it on.? Arrange for it to be swiped out of your checking account before that happen and put into an IRA or other savings account.

2. Prioritize your savings

  • Emergency fund first: If you've heard it once, you've heard it a hundred times. You need at least six months of living expenses - in cash - just in case. When you first start to have money to put away, it's important to fill up this bucket first. That way, you have cash to fall back on when the roof leaks or the computer breaks and you don't have to reach for the credit cards. Put this money in a boring old savings account, where you may not earn much interest but you can get at it if you need it.
  • Matched contributions: After you satisfy your emergency needs, you can start putting away money for other, longer-term goals. Any money that gets matched comes next on the list for the obvious reasons - the returns are big, instantaneous and guaranteed. You're most likely to get your hands on these through your retirement plan at work, like a 401(k). Another place you may see matching dollars is your state's 529 plan, which is a retirement savings tool. It's rare, but not unheard of, particularly for lower income residents: Colorado's Direct Portfolio College Savings Plan offers a dollar-for-dollar match of up to $500 for lower and middle income residents. Kansas has a similar program, matching contributions above $100 and up to $600 per year.
  • Tax-advantaged accounts: Once you've maxed out your ability to grab matching dollars, saving in tax-advantaged accounts is your next best move. Some of these offer you a tax break for putting the money in - as with 401(k)s, traditional IRAs, some 529s. All let the money grow tax-deferred while it's in the account. And the Roth IRA, though you are taxed on contributions, lets the money grow tax free forever and doesn't require you to start taking it out at a particular time. All are great advantages when it comes to growing your savings.
  • Discretionary accounts: So what happens when you've funded your emergency cushion, grabbed all of your matching dollars, maxed out your ability to contribute to retirement and other tax-advantaged accounts, and still have money to save? By all means, save! If we're talking about money for a short-term goal, put it into an account where you won't lose it (that means no stocks) and you can access it when you need it (no long-term CDs). If it's for retirement or something else further down the road, put it in a brokerage accounts and buy some mutual funds that give you the opportunity for growth.

3. Set a realistic savings percentage per month

Start by saving 2 percent per month. It will force you to cutout the small things that you probably won't notice. Avoid a "crash diet" savings approach (setting unrealistic goals just like some people do with food) in order to guarantee long-term savings success. ?Almost ANYONE can save 2 percent.

In the long-term, aim to save 10 percent to 15 percent per month, but you can't start there. Start small and up it as you go along.? Something is better than nothing at all.

4. Save when you can

When you find yourself with some extra cash, don't go out on a shopping spree.? Resist the urge to spend it all. ?You never know what the future may bring.?

ASUS VivoTab RT tablet arrives October 26th, starting at $599 for the 32GB model; keyboard dock included

ASUS VivoTab RT tablet arrives October 26th, starting at $599 for the 32GB model keyboard dock included

In case you haven't heard, a lot -- and we mean a lot -- of Windows devices are going on sale this week. Today it's ASUS' turn to give its lineup a formal coming-out party: the company is hosting a press event here in New York City, where it just announced the dockable VivoTab RT will be available on October 26th, starting at $599 for the 32GB model, keyboard included. Alternatively, you can buy the 64GB tablet and docking station for $699. As we previously reported, an LTE version is coming to AT&T. Finally, ASUS says it will also sell the tablet and dock individually, but we haven't yet learned final pricing for those items. We'll update this post when we do.

If this is your first introduction to the VivoTab RT, here's a quick recap: it basically offers everything people loved about ASUS' Android-based Transformer tablets, except it runs Windows RT instead. Like the Infinity and other recent ASUS tablets, it has a 600-nit Super IPS+ display, offering 178 viewing angles and Gorilla Glass protection. Other specs include a quad-core Tegra 3 chip (the new T30, to be exact), 2GB of RAM, NFC and an 8-megapixel rear camera with an auto-focusing f/2.2 lens. Then there's that keyboard dock, which has a USB 2.0 port and built-in battery rated for seven hours. (The tablet itself is said to last up to nine hours.) Finally, of course, as a Windows RT device it comes loaded with all of the same stock applications you'll find in full Windows 8 (Mail, IE 10, etc.), along with Office 2013 Home & Student. The main difference: you won't be able to install legacy Windows programs.

The VivoTab RT arrives the same day as the Surface for Windows RT and indeed, we'll be eager to compare the two, especially since pricing for the keyboard-tablet bundles is identical. In fact, ASUS sent us one to test, and you can expect a review any day now. Until then, we've embedded some press photos below, in case you're just getting your first look.

Toronto Film Festival Sets 2013 Dates That Overlap With Jewish Holy Days

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - The Toronto International Film Festival announced its 2013 dates, September 5-15, 2013, which overlap with the Jewish High Holy Days and could leave some filmmakers, agents and executives to face a tough decision - to pray or to go.

The dates for the festival, one of the fall's premiere events, overlap with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year (September 4 - September 6), and Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar (September 13-14).

Artistic director Cameron Bailey acknowledged the conflict in Monday's announcement, blaming the busy schedule of festivals in September and October.

"As always, we launch on the Thursday after Labour Day," Bailey said in a statement. "This year that means our dates unfortunately overlap with both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. With our position fixed in a crowded calendar of festivals regulated by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF), it's not possible to shift the dates. As a result, we will do our best to schedule repeat screenings to accommodate festival goers who will be observing the Jewish High Holy Days."

Those observing either holiday typically spend the day (and sometimes night) in temple. Yom Kippur also calls for a fast - excluding even that Canadian staple, maple syrup.

Toronto is one of the few can't-miss festivals of the year thanks to its breadth of offerings and a growing but unofficial market. This year, it featured 147 world premieres and more than 400,000 public attendees.

In recent years, it has gained prominence in the run-up to the Oscars, helping to launch films such as "The King's Speech" on their way to Best Picture wins.

A BLOG ABOUT LOVE: Love...or Love Addiction?

When I was in my twenties - oh man - I had a very immature view of love.? I was once dating a guy and felt a lot of "love" for him.? But it turns out that we had completely different lifestyles and goals (he was a very good person, but we just weren't even close to being a good match or being on the same desired path).? Deep down, I was actually kind of embarrassed about the relationship because it was SO CLEAR to me and everyone else that we were not a good match, but yet I remained with him for a long time - even with a pit in my stomach.? And why was I with him?? Because he loved me.? He really loved me a lot.? And so I felt "love" for him back.? How could I not?? He showered me with attention, he was thoughtful, affectionate, etc.? Who doesn't love to be loved?? It's very, very easy to love that attention and companionship.? It feels amazing.? Even when your gut says this isn't a good match or you don't fully respect this person's choices in life, the idea of being loved and "being in love" can feel so good that it's like an addiction that you just can't get rid of - you just can't let it go.?? You may even hold onto it for dear life.

To my dear readers - are you in a relationship and feeling some agony about it in your gut, yet at the same time feeling like you are "in love" and feeling "love" for this partner?? CONFUSING, right?? Are you in love with someone who actually would not impress you if you stepped back and watched him/her from the sidelines in their lives?? Are you in love with someone, yet in your gut, you have a nagging feeling that this isn't the best decision to be with this person?? If so...

consider the idea that you might be "in love with the idea of being in love."

I hope this makes sense.? And if you think this could be you, know that you certainly are not alone.? I've talked to so many women who have been there.? In fact, we've probably all been there at least once.

Here are two things that I think contribute to this problem...

1.? LOW SELF-WORTH.

2.? SEX.? (yep)

Let me explain... :)

1.? LOW SELF WORTH.
This is the easy one.? ha.? Self-worth is soooo crucial in dating.? Oh my goodness.? Please, please...if you are struggling with this, tackle it head on.? Try to overcome this.? It will help you tremendously as you date and try to decide who to marry one day.? Without self worth, it's easy to feel a little desperate.? It's easy to look past major red flags in a relationship simply because you want so desperately to be loved.? Without self-worth, it's easy to get yourself into some pickles.? It's easy to stay in a relationship for all the wrong reasons.? It's easy to latch on to anyone who throws you a bone.? It's easy to think that you won't be WHOLE until you find a partner or a spouse.? It's easy to feel as though finding a partner is the only thing that matters, and that life is really in a holding pattern until you meet "the one" who will make everything feel complete.? I hope you can see how detrimental this can be in a relationship.? Someone with low self-worth often demands that their partner make them whole; they rely on someone else to provide them with happiness.? Oh dear.? This thinking is NOT HEALTHY.? This will not lead to a healthy relationship.? This will lead to one big roller coaster.

If you feel your self-worth really could use a boost, there is hope for you!? :)? And I think feeling this way is really quite normal, actually.? But...PLEASE CHOOSE TO IMPROVE!? :)? There are so many things you can do!? Here are some ideas to get you started, though I am sure there are many more (if you have anything to add, please leave it in the comments!)

  • Find a professional you can connect with who can walk you through overcoming this (keep shopping around for a good fit, if necessary!)
  • Ask someone you already know and respect to coach you.? A self-worth mentor!? Why not?
  • Go find a church or a supportive community!? Churches can be amazing in helping people to understand their value.? The Mormon church has been instrumental in helping me to develop my self-worth.? Though there are certainly so many organizations that could help in this area.? I recommend finding one!? :)
  • Speak with a spiritual leader or healer.? To me, healing on a spiritual level can bring about the most powerful changes I've ever seen in people of all faiths and belief systems.
  • Get some exercise.? This can do wonders!!
  • Get a Dr. check-up - make sure your hormones, Vitamin D levels, thyroid and other triggers are in check.? Physical imbalances can make you feel down about yourself and your life.? You can help the situation a lot by maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
  • Do activities that make you feel positively about yourself.? Serve others.? Find a hobby.? Play an instrument.? Do something daring.
  • Become a seeker.? Try to figure this out.? Read books by experts like Brene Brown & Eckart Tolle.? Talk to friends.? Take classes.? Search philosophy and scripture.?
  • Replace the negative script in your head with a more positive script until those positive words become your belief system.??

2.? SEX.??
OK, I think sex plays a huge part in getting addicted to "love".? You see, sex creates a powerful bond between two people; it DOES create a desire to be with someone.? In fact, that's why it's so dang amazing for a husband and wife to have it in their marriage.? :)? There are few things more powerful than sex.? BUT, when two people who are unmarried and who are still trying to figure out who and when to marry and how to make the best decisions for their lives.....sex can really, really muddy the decision making process; it can make your brain go to mush.? You see, sex creates feelings of love, safety, security, desire and bonding.? But it can create those same feelings EVEN IF you are with someone who you know deep down is not a good match for you.? In other words, you could become bonded with the wrong person, with a jerk, with someone who is not ready for marriage, with someone who is not treating you well.? You may not even be on the same page in life at all!? Yet sex can bond you and make you feel enhanced feelings of being "in love" with each other.? Talk about getting yourself stuck in a difficult and confusing situation.? Some may think I'm old fashioned on this, but I believe in empowering women (and men) before they get married, when at all possible.? I think if you remove sex from the equation, it leads to less long-term roller coaster relationships that should have ended a long time ago.? It leads to less devastating, heart wrenching, messy break ups that can feel like a divorce.? Instead, it provides an opportunity for people to think more clearly and therefore make better decisions regarding marriage.? And because of that, I'm all for it!??

__________________________________________________________________________________

I'd love to hear your thoughts! Do you think I'm off my rocker?? Spot on?? :)

And, do you think you've ever been in a relationship because you were addicted to "love"???Any wisdom or thoughts to pass along?

10 Ways to Impress Your In-Laws

The relationship with one?s in-laws is pretty delicate and fraught with many challenges. If you handle it effectively, then it can be one of the most pleasant relationships of your life. So to make the right impressions, here are 10 ways to impress your in-laws.

1. Dress smartly

Clothes do make the first impression. Wear smart clothes that flatter your physique and bring out the best in your personality. Most importantly, wear proper clothes as per the occasion.

2. Sound intelligent without being arrogant

There?s a fine line between sounding intelligent and arrogant. Intelligence impresses people whereas arrogance antagonizes them. So just be careful to stay on the right side.

3. Remember their birthdays/anniversaries

Everyone likes to be wished on their birthdays and anniversaries. It just shows how thoughtful you are and that you care enough to wish. So include their special days in your calendar and make sure to wish them through a simple call, sweet card or flowers.

4. Show appreciation

Acknowledge and appreciate their good gestures or acts. Do not assume that they would know. Show your appreciation by mentioning it.

5. Invite them over for lunch/dinner

Invite and impress them with whatever you cook the best! Make them go gaga over your favorite pie or steak. The best way to reach anyone?s heart is through their stomach!
