Making Tea, Making Japan: Cultural Nationalism in Practice

"Making tea for a guest in Japan is a highly encultured act, demanding much more than a pour of hot water over powdered tea. Kristin Surak has plumbed the depths of the practice and demonstrated the enduring meanings of tea for Japanese performers of the craft."?Merry White, Boston University

"A regrettable schizophrenia characterizes the study of nationalism, with macro and micro analysts rarely engaging rival views. Hence, Kristin Surak's book is a theoretical breakthrough, showing the changing functions and social bearers of a single ritual over a long and troubled historical record. Elegantly written and extraordinarily argued."?John A. Hall, James McGill Professor of Comparative Historical Sociology, McGill University

"Kristin Surak's richly contextualized study shows in vivid detail how and why tea came to be, and remains, such a strong carrier of nation in Japan, at once performance and product. Sociologists in particular will not want to miss the fine ethnographic investigation of the tea ceremony in contemporary Japan."?Priscilla Ferguson, Columbia University

"Surak's careful ethnography and clear theoretical analysis demonstrate the historical role of the tea ceremony in constructing and defining the nation, but she also shows how it is an important part of the slightly different work of maintaining and explicating Japanese-ness. Through careful ethnographic details she shows how the tea ceremony is embodied in ways both gendered and historically contingent; how it is used to distinguish Japanese from other Asians, Asia from the West, 'good' Japanese from others who are less good; and how it is carried not only in performative bodies but in places/spaces. This often fascinating and lively study of chanoyu draws the reader through these various, and intertwined, processes over Japan's recent historical past, unpacking a rich trove of material artefacts, rituals, and texts."?Sarah Corse, University of Virginia

The tea ceremony persists as one of the most evocative symbols of Japan. Originally a pastime of elite warriors in premodern society, it was later recast as an emblem of the modern Japanese state, only to be transformed again into its current incarnation, largely the hobby of middle-class housewives. How does the cultural practice of a few come to represent a nation as a whole?

Although few non-Japanese scholars have peered behind the walls of a tea room, sociologist Kristin Surak came to know the inner workings of the tea world over the course of ten years of tea training. Here she offers the first comprehensive analysis of the practice that includes new material on its historical changes, a detailed excavation of its institutional organization, and a careful examination of what she terms "nation-work"?the labor that connects the national meanings of a cultural practice and the actual experience and enactment of it. She concludes by placing tea ceremony in comparative perspective, drawing on other expressions of nation-work, such as gymnastics and music, in Europe and Asia.

Taking readers on a rare journey into the elusive world of tea ceremony, Surak offers an insightful account of the fundamental processes of modernity?the work of making nations.

Kristin Surak is an Assistant Professor of Comparative Sociology at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Her work has been published in the European Journal of Sociology, International Migration Review, Ethnic and Racial Studies, and the New Left Review.

Early detection vital in breast cancer batttle

Marion Lord is a testament to the importance of detecting breast cancer at an early stage. The Jacksonville resident said hers was caught when it was 6 millimeters, or slightly smaller than a garden pea.

That was 2? years ago, when she was 68. Since it was found early, she had a lumpectomy and radiation and was able to forgo chemotherapy.

Lord is a strong proponent of annual mammograms, in part because she was once director of imaging services at Baptist Medical Center downtown and saw so many cancers diagnosed.

?A lot of us are alive today and doing well because our cancer was caught early,? Lord said.

In recent years, improvements in mammography, alternative diagnostic techniques and greater awareness have made early detection easier.

Mammograms, which use X-rays to scan the breasts, are still the first-line test to find tumors in their early stages, Jacksonville radiologists said. For decades, the only option was mammograms that record breast images on film. But in 2003, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of digital mammograms, which store and analyze the information on a computer, making them easily retrievable for reviewing, said Christine Granfield, medical director of breast imaging at Baptist Health.

Though the digital version can run $375,000 compared with $80,000 for the film unit, Granfield said, Jacksonville hospitals have made the switch.

The digital unit?s higher resolution allows it to better detect cancers while delivering a lower dose of radiation to the patient, Granfield said. In addition, the images can be contrast-adjusted so the technologist doesn?t need to repeat them as often.

Since spring 2011, Baptist?s Hill Breast Center has offered an option known as molecular breast imaging (MBI) that is very accurate at showing small cancers due to abnormal cell activity, Granfield said. It identifies tumors that may not be visible on a mammogram in women with dense breast tissue.

In a trial of more than 1,000 patients at Mayo?s Rochester Clinic, it found the cancers more than 90 percent of the time, she said. Currently, she said, MBI is used more for problem-solving and as a screening tool in women with a family history of breast cancer.

?There are studies being done to evaluate whether all women with dense breasts ? not just those with a strong family history ? should have annual mammography alternating with MBI to better evaluate for small tumors,? Granfield said.

Tomosynthesis is another technique that?s recently become available, said Michelle McDonough, assistant professor of radiology at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville. It takes multiple X-ray pictures of each breast from many angles and then sends them to a computer to create three-dimensional images. Mayo in Rochester, Minn., has a unit used for research purposes, she said.

Shands Jacksonville?s Breast Health Center acquired tomosynthesis in August 2011.

?We?ve been using it a lot in the past year,? said Martha Wasserman, chief of the center?s Division of Women?s Imaging. ?We?ve had great success with it. We?ve already uncovered lesions that we could not see on the standard mammogram.?

Its niche probably will lie in making cancers easier to see in dense breast tissue, McDonough said. About 40 percent of women have dense breasts, according to the U.S. National Cancer Institute.

The FDA added another imaging system to the arsenal in September when it approved the first ultrasound device to detect breast cancer in women with dense tissue. It?s to be used along with standard mammography for women with no breast cancer symptoms.

There are other studies under way, particularly in the nuclear medicine arena, to further aid early detection, McDonough said.

Mammography still remains the first line of defense because it?s readily available and inexpensive, McDonough and Granfield said.

?The other reason is that there are things that we find in mammography that we don?t see in ultrasound or even in an MRI [magnetic resonance imaging],? McDonough said.

A mammogram also is key to determining the next exam needed to evaluate a specific problem, Granfield said. Ultrasound and MRI are generally used as problem-solving tools in women with abnormal mammograms, she said.

MRI also is used as a higher-risk screening tool in patients with a strong family history and an initial cancer diagnosis to better evaluate the extent of the tumor, Granfield said.

She cited a recent major study from Sweden, where almost all women 40 and older undergo screening mammography.

It showed that the single greatest factor over the past 30 to 35 years in improving survival was the widespread use of mammograms to find cancers at an earlier stage.

To make it easier for some women to get mammograms, St. Vincent?s HealthCare has a mobile digital mammography unit.

?The reason that?s important for detection is that we take the unit to different areas and provide screening mammography for women either at their work places or in their neighborhoods,? said Cynthia Farah, St. Vincent?s oncology service director.

Above all, improved awareness is key, Granfield and others said.

?There are parts of the world where it is not talked about, and consequently, it is the No. 1 killer in those regions,? said Granfield, adding that she is grateful to live at a time in the United States where it is widely discussed. ?If a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer now, the odds are in her favor that she will survive the disease.?

Soapy 'Won't Back Down' gets a failing grade

Walden Media

Viola Davis and Maggie Gyllenhaal in "'Won't Back Down."

By David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

The jury is still out on a solution to the national education system crisis, but the verdict is delivered with a heavy hand and a stacked deck in the formulaic "Won?t Back Down." Simplifying complex school-reform hurdles into tidy inspirational clich?s while demonizing both teachers? unions and bureaucracy-entrenched education boards, the movie addresses timely issues but eschews shading in favor of blunt black and white. It?s old-school Lifetime fodder dressed up in Hollywood trappings.

In the broadest terms, Daniel Barnz?s film, co-written with Brin Hill, is a dramatized counterpart to Davis Guggenheim?s 2010 documentary "Waiting for Superman,? which pointed to charter schools as the only way out of the public-education quagmire. That film was partly financed by Walden Media, the backers of this Fox release, suggesting that the problem of underperforming inner-city classrooms is a pet cause for the company.

VIDEO: "Won't Back Down" trailer

In Barnz and Hill?s by-the-numbers screenplay -- which trumpets that vaguest of catch-all legitimization banners, ?Inspired by actual events? -- the catalyst for much-needed change at Adams Elementary School in Pittsburgh is crusading Everymom Jamie Fitzpatrick (Maggie Gyllenhaal). Her dyslexic daughter Malia (Emily Alyn Lind) is stuck in a class with a teacher (Nancy Bach) who is a monster of job-secure complacency, and a principal (Bill Nunn) too mired in unionized paralysis to help.

A single mother working two jobs and unable to afford tuition at better alternatives, Jamie bones up on the ?fail-safe? maneuver, the film?s equivalent of the parent trigger law. That controversial legislation -- on the books in some form in a handful of states and under consideration in many others -- allows concerned parents and teachers to intervene in floundering public schools. In the film?s example, it primarily means getting past restrictive union controls and a do-nothing education board.

The absurd idea that the parents of an entire student body are too apathetic to worry about their kids? education until Jamie comes along like some rocker-chick Erin Brockovich is just one of the film?s condescendingly movie-ish conceits. Played with grating one-note pluckiness by Gyllenhaal, Jamie overcompensates for her lack of a college education by self-consciously sprinkling her conversations with words like ?trepidatious.? Yet, darned if this scrappy dynamo doesn?t get the whole community galvanized.

Even more objectionable is the depiction of the burned-out staff at Adams. They mill around in the break room bitching about teachers like Malia?s, saying, ?The only thing the district does well is protect its mistakes.? But the general lack of motivation is palpable, and even Nona Alberts (Viola Davis), a committed educator like her mother before her, has lost faith in her profession.

The only exception at Adams appears to be Teach For America do-gooder and soulful hunk Michael Perry (Oscar Isaac), who leads his class in line-dancing numbers, accompanying them on ukulele as they sing about ?Goin? to College.? Naturally, this makes Jamie swoon.

A perfunctory romance blooms, but Michael vacillates in his support for Jamie?s cause. Preferring to focus his commitment on his class only, he is reluctant to stray from union-sanctioned guidelines. Jamie?s sole consistent ally is Nona, who risks alienating the entire teaching staff, including her feisty pal Breena (Rosie Perez). While she?s worn down by the challenges of a broken system, not to mention the end of her marriage and the learning difficulties of her own son (Dante Brown), Nona reluctantly gets with the empowerment program.

However, this is another one of those movies where a tenacious white person leads the charge to save inner-city kids, achieving a miracle transformation through sheer force of will. While Nona is the insider with the education experience, she?s second fiddle throughout the fight, getting much of her dignity not from the script but from Davis, who could do this role in her sleep.

In order to provide a gossamer-thin semblance of balance, Barnz and Hill plant one jaded idealist apiece in the teachers? union and the education board. That essentially leaves Holly Hunter and Marianne Jean-Baptiste playing variations on the same role, both of them primed for redemption as they rediscover their buried convictions. Elsewhere, the opposition is reduced -- most notably by Ned Eisenberg?s belligerently uncompromising union chief -- to a force of obstinate blindness as to what?s good for the kids, and for the majority of disillusioned teachers.

Given the disingenuous way in which this lumbering movie pushes obvious buttons and manipulates the audience?s emotional investment while conveniently skimming the issues, it?s a mystery how some of these names got roped in.

Following her breakout work in "The Help," this is a particularly unhappy use of Davis? considerable talents. Hunter also is too smart an actor to be stuck playing the transparent construct of a compromised Norma Rae. Lance Reddick (The Wire) is given an entirely thankless role as Nona?s businesslike departing husband, while Ving Rhames is on hand literally to deliver a speech as principal of the exemplary Rosa Parks Elementary School during a lottery draw for new students.

That scene is one of many such preachy interludes in a dumbed-down agenda film that veers shamelessly between didacticism and soap.

Samsung SSD 840 Pro caters to speed seekers with faster random access

Samsung SSD 840 Pro caters to speed seekers with 100,000IOPS, faster writes

It's difficult to thrive in the solid-state drive world. Unless you've got just the right controller and flash memory, most performance-minded PC users will rarely give you a second glance. Samsung muscled its way into that narrow view with the SSD 830 last year; it intends to lock our attention with the new SSD 840 and SSD 840 Pro. The Pro's 520MB/s and 450MB/s sequential read and write speeds are only modest bumps over the 830, but they don't tell the whole story of just how fast it gets. The upgraded MDX controller boosts the random read access to a nicely rounded 100,000IOPS, and random writes have more than doubled to 78,000IOPS or 90,000IOPS, depending on who you ask and what drive you use. The improved performance in either direction is a useful boost to on-the-ground performance, as both AnandTech and Storage Review will tell you. We're waiting on details of the ordinary triple level cell-based 840 model beyond its 120GB, 250GB and 500GB capacities, although there won't be an enormous premium for the multi-level cell 840 Pro over existing drives when it arrives in mid-October -- the flagship line should start at $100 for a basic 64GB drive, and peak at $600 for the ultimate 512GB version.

Why Your Phone, Cable & Internet Bills Cost So ... - Yahoo! Finance

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook!

The U.S. has fallen behind much of the Western world when it comes to phone, cable and Internet service. Americans actually pay much more for inferior service compared to their global counterparts.

In his new book, The Fine Print: How Big Companies Use 'Plain English' to Rob You Blind, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter David Cay Johnston highlights these astounding facts:

  • Americans pay four times as much as the French for an Internet triple-play package?phone, cable TV and Internet?at an average of $160 per month versus $38 per month.
  • The French get global free calling and worldwide live television. Their Internet is also 10 times faster at downloading information and 20 times faster uploading it.
  • America has gone from #1 in Internet speed (when we invented it) to 29th in the world and falling.
  • Bulgaria is among the countries with faster Internet service.
  • Americans pay 38 times as much as the Japanese for Internet data.

Since the mid-1970's when Ma Bell was cited as holding a monopoly over phone service, Americans have been told more competition would lower their phone bill. But the promise of lower prices has actually led to higher prices, says Johnston.

In his book, he tells of a woman who in 1984 paid $9.51 for her local phone service. He writes:

"By 2003 her bill had swollen fourfold to $38.90. In the two decades since the breakup of the AT&T monopoly, even after adjusting for inflation, [her] telephone cost $2.30 for each dollar paid in 1984. And that was without any charges for long-distance calls."

Not only have prices increased, phone service providers now charge fees for everything, including options that used to be free, such as directory service. Bills have also become increasingly complicated. A poll of 1,000 people found that only three people actually knew how to read their statement. That means virtually no one understands their phone bill in its entirety.

Of cable service Johnston writes:

"Since 1995, average cable prices have been rising 2.6 times faster than the cost of living, reaching an average of almost $53 a month for basic, no frill service in 2009, FCC reports show....

According to SNL Kagan, a market research firm, the average cable bill in 2011 was $78, almost double the price of $40 in 2001 and significantly higher than the FCC figure.

How did this happen?

"The telecos got the rules changed while we weren't watching," says Johnston in the accompanying interview. Basically, the phone and cable companies lobbied Washington to change laws and regulations to favor their business over their customers.

And remember the so-called "Information Superhighway"?

Over the course of the last 20 years, nearly $500 billion has been collected by the telecom companies to (allegedly) bring America into the 21st century with an "Information Superhighway," says Johnston. That works out ot $3,000 per household to have access to high-speed Internet.

But America did not get what it was promised and much of the country will never get fiber optic lines, Johnston tells The Daily Ticker. And even in cities that do have the faster service, the service is not always accessible.

"This is terrible for commerce and our economic future," says Johnston, adding that our global competitors are investing in the proper infrastructure.

"The companies essentially have a business model that is antithetical to economic growth," he says. "Profits go up if they can provide slow Internet at super high prices."

The relationship between phone and cable providers has essentially become a cartel, says Johnston, who cites the relationship between Verizon and Comcast.

He writes:

Verizon announced in 2008 that it would stop building out its FiOS (fiber-optic system) once it reaches about 16 million of America's 100 million households....

Instead, it has made deals with Comcast to sell its services using Comcast cables. Verizon said it anticipates similar deals with other cable providers to sell of their systems.

In terms of phone service, what America really got was a duopoly, says Johnston, noting that AT&T and Verizon control 60% of phone service in America.

Newly discovered molecule could deliver drugs to treat diseases

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Kansas State University researchers have discovered a molecule that may be capable of delivering drugs inside the body to treat diseases.

For the first time, researchers have designed and created a membrane-bounded vesicle formed entirely of peptides -- molecules made up of amino acids, the building blocks of protein. The membrane could serve as a new drug delivery system to safely treat cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.

A study led by John Tomich, professor of biochemistry at Kansas State University, has been published in the journal PLOS ONE in September, and a patent for the discovery is pending.

The peptides are a set of self-assembling branched molecules made up of naturally occurring amino acids. The chemical properties of a peptide create a vesicle that Tomich describes as a bubble: It's made up of a thin membrane and is hollow inside. Created in a water solution, the bubble is filled with water rather than air.

The peptides -- or bubbles -- can be made in a solution containing a drug or other molecule that becomes encapsulated as the peptide assembles, yielding a trapped compound, much like a gelatin capsule holds over-the-counter oral remedies. The peptide vesicles could be delivered to appropriate cells in the body to treat diseases and minimize potential side effects.

"We see this as a new way to deliver any kind of molecule to cells," Tomich said. "We know that in certain diseases subpopulations of cells have gone awry, and we'd like to be able to specifically target them instead of attacking every cell, including healthy ones."

The finding could improve gene therapy, which has the potential to cure diseases by replacing diseased cells with healthy ones. Gene therapy is being tested in clinical trials, but the biggest challenge is how best to deliver the genes.

Methods include cells with a virus being injected into the body, and liposomes -- fatty compounds -- carrying the genes. However, these methods may present some problems.

When a virus is used, the body's immune system can attack the virus or cause a tumor. Lipid-based systems may cause inflammation and may not properly bind to cells.

The peptides created by Kansas State University researchers have advantages over their lipid counterparts. The peptides have improved stability and durability, are easier and quicker to create, and they could be delivered to a specific area in the body.

The peptides can be designed to have the ability to target cells, tissues, tumors or organs, and to encapsulate chemical reagents, antibodies, toxins and inhibitors, Tomich said.

"We don't even begin to know all of the potential applications for this discovery," he said. "We envision that many products could be packaged and delivered using these peptides."

Partial funding for the study came from the Kansas State University Johnson Cancer Research Center, National Institutes of Health and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.

Kansas State University collaborators include Sushanth Gudlur, May 2012 doctoral graduate in biochemistry, who first published the results in a dissertation; Pinakin Sukthankar, doctoral student in biochemistry; Jian Gao, former postdoctoral fellow in the department of biochemistry; Luz Adriana Avila Flores, graduate research assistant in the department of biochemistry; Yasuaki Hiromasa, research assistant professor of biochemistry; and Jianhan Chen, assistant professor of biochemistry. Takeo Iwamoto from the Jikei University School of Medicine in Japan also was a collaborator.

Redskins' Kyle Shanahan takes blame for penalty

(AP) ? Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan accepted responsibility Monday for his unsportsmanlike conduct penalty during the final confusing seconds of a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

The son of head coach Mike Shanahan issued a written statement vowing that such an incident "will never happen again." Kyle Shanahan did not apologize in the statement, and the Redskins for the second straight day declined requests that he speak to reporters.

NFL executive vice president of football operations Ray Anderson said he was reviewing Kyle Shanahan's actions from Sunday's game. Anderson has fined Denver Broncos head coach John Fox $30,000 and defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio $25,000 for verbally abusing officials during a Week 2 game, adding "there is a longstanding NFL rule prohibiting verbal or physical abuse of game officials."

Shanahan was whistled for berating an official as the Redskins were attempting to drive for a tying touchdown in the 38-31 defeat. Robert Griffin III spiked the ball with 7 seconds remaining at Cincinnati's 34-yard line, and tight end Fred Davis was called for a false start as the offense lined up for the next play.

At least one official apparently indicated ? erroneously ? that there would be a 10-second runoff because of the false start penalty, which would run out the clock. Cincinnati's coaches and players along the sideline then walked onto the field, thinking the game was over.

That's when the Redskins coaching staff ? and Kyle Shanahan in particular ? went livid.

"When I overheard the official tell the head coach that the game was over after the false start penalty, I tried to explain that the game was not over," Kyle Shanahan's statement said. "That is what resulted in the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. I tried to get an explanation of how I could get that penalty when half of the other team was on the field as well.

"I was frustrated, and in the process of trying to get some answers from the officials, I conducted myself in the wrong way. I ask our players to hold themselves to a high standard and be accountable and I know that I'm accountable for my actions as well. I know that I need to handle those situations better in the future. My emotions got the best of me and I know it's my responsibility. This will never happen again."

The replacement officials ? who are handling the games while the regulars are locked out in a labor dispute with the NFL ? mistakenly marked off 20 yards for the penalty, instead of the customary 15. There was also the 5-yard penalty for the false start, so the ball ended up at Washington's 41, giving the Redskins a third-and-50, still with 7 seconds remaining.

The game ended on the next play, with Griffin heaving an incomplete pass downfield.

Asked if he was disappointed in his son's behavior, Mike Shanahan said: "He thought the game was over. ... The official told me that the game was over. We knew the game shouldn't be over. They had half their football team on the field. What I was trying to do was get a personal foul (called on Cincinnati). ... That wasn't the difference in winning and losing the game. You would like cooler heads to prevail and that's what I expect."

Mike Shanahan added he wasn't exactly a picture of calm himself.

"I'm not sure I was very cool in that situation," the head coach said. "I was very, very strong with my words with the official letting him know it wasn't the end of the game. Now is that cooler heads prevailing? Or are you trying to get one more play and explain what the rules are in the National Football League?"

Asked if he thinks Kyle Shanahan should face league discipline, Mike Shanahan said: "I think we'll let the powers that be take a look at what transpired on both sides and let them make the decision."

The Redskins have now drawn unsportsmanlike penalties in back-to-back games while trying to drive for a tying score, but Kyle Shanahan's explanation came a day late and in a different manner compared to the previous one.

Receiver Joshua Morgan immediately accepted the blame for throwing the ball at cornerback Cortland Finnegan on Washington's final possession in a three-point loss to the St. Louis Rams a week earlier. The penalty turned a possible game-tying 47-yard field goal attempt into a 62-yard attempt that fell far short.

"I should've kept my calm," Morgan told reporters in the locker room after the game.

Asked if the coaching staff was setting a proper example for the players, Mike Shanahan said he doesn't think there should ever be an exception to his regular schedule that has his top assistants speaking to reporters only on Thursdays.

"We've got a process that we work through," Mike Shanahan said. "And that's our process."

'Sesame Street' switching things for Elmo

NEW YORK (AP) ? Elmo will be carrying a new tune on "Sesame Street." Several, actually.

A shift in how the popular puppet is deployed marks the most visible change on "Sesame Street," the children's program that began its 43rd season on public television on Monday.

The "Elmo's World" segment is being phased out after 13 years, replaced by a new segment, "Elmo the Musical." Ten new skits, each lasting 11 minutes, have been prepared.

The idea is to incorporate music into the "Sesame Street" emphasis on introducing concepts in science, technology, engineering and math to the preschool-aged viewers, said Rosemarie Truglio, senior vice president of education and research at Sesame Workshop, the company that makes the series.

Elmo will use singing and dancing to draw attention to the need for problem-solving skills and make the learning entertaining, she said. The character will be featured in "Sea Captain the Musical," ''Mountain Climber the Musical" and "President the Musical."

The current Elmo, geared largely to 2-year-olds, had some repetitive music segments. "Elmo the Musical" will have seven or eight songs in each skit, and will be aimed at preschool youngsters who are slightly older.

"With really young children, the arts are very relevant to their lives," Truglio said. "We want to be able to use the arts as a tool."

"Sesame Street" began its emphasis on science and technology last season.

The children's show is also bringing in its usual series of guest celebrities this season: Charlize Theron, Halle Berry, Melissa McCarthy, Steve Carell, John Hamm, Zac Effron, Blake Griffin, the rock band Train and rapper Common.

ODU's Heinicke passes for D-I record 730 yards

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) ? Taylor Heinicke set a Division I record by passing for 730 yards as Old Dominion rallied to beat New Hampshire 64-61 in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams.

Heinicke was 55-for-79, setting school records for both, and coming two completions short of the FCS record. David Klingler of Houston had the Division I record of 716 yards passing against Arizona State on Dec. 2, 1990.

Earlier this season, Sam Durley, of Eureka (Ill.) College, set the NCAA single-game mark with 736 passing yards in a 62-55 win against Knox in a Division II game.

Heinicke, a sophomore from Atlanta, has thrown for 1,921 and 19 touchdowns for Old Dominion (4-0).

New Hampshire (2-2) dominated the CAA's top-ranked defense throughout the first three quarters, taking a 54-38 lead into the fourth quarter.

However, Heinicke threw for two touchdowns to Nick Mayers and Angus Harper scored on a 2-yard run, capping a 23-0 scoring run for the Monarchs. Mayers hauled in 12 passes for 271 yards.

The Wildcats rallied, tying the game 61-all behind a 45-yard pass from Andy Vailas, but Heinicke led the Monarchs on an 11-play, 74-yard drive that ended with Jared Brown's game-winning 25-yard field goal.

Old Dominion has outscored opponents 132-24 in the second half this season.

Vailas threw five touchdowns for New Hampshire.

Twitter CEO reveals plans for interactive tweets, content curation, reinforces belief in syndication

Twitter CEO reveals plans for interactive tweets, content curation, reinforces belief in syndication

Twitter has ruffled a few feathers recently, so when CEO Dick Costolo took the stage at the Online News Association conference in San Francisco, he took the opportunity to put some minds at rest. First he dismissed the idea that the service would become a media company by forcing users to the site or official app for content, before reasserting his belief in syndication. Costolo then went on to imply that the reason behind the tighter (and unpopular) API controls was ensuring quality -- stating that Twitter would reach its full potential now there's more control over how tweets are delivered. With boots strapped, we can look forward to some new features, such as the option to curate messages that are published (such as during live events) plus tweets with interactive features like polls during live sports games. The famous 140 character limit is to remain, but will also serve as a "caption for additional functionality." Perhaps of most interest to disenfranchised developers, however, was the mention of application functionality in tweets, where short messages could contain small interactive apps. Something for devs to get potentially get back on board with? We hope so. But until further details unfold, we're still left considering our options.

What is a probiotic? | Anxiety Clinic & Health Care

probioticAlmost a century ago the Russian microbiologist Ilya Metchnikoff postulated that some bacteria are not necessarily harmful to humans and that could actually be beneficial to your health and wellness. It was first proposed intake live bacteria contained in fermented milks as a way to modulate the intestinal flora and prevent various diseases and prolong life. His research earned him the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1907.

Since then, from these first contributions, science has worked to learn more of what today are called ?probiotics? that Fuller defined in 1989 as ?those living microorganisms, mainly bacteria and yeasts, which are added as a supplement in diet and that benefit the host by improving its microbial balance of intestinal flora.?

These microorganisms ingested through food living manage to reach the small intestine where bacteria interact with existing microflora. Furthermore colonize the intestine and stabilize intestinal flora adhering to the intestinal mucosa to prevent the activity of harmful microorganisms. Therefore, lactic acid bacteria also have immunomodulatory properties to the extent that stimulate the production of antibodies and reinforce the immune system.

It is considered a probiotic food that meets a number of very specific requirements:

- It has to be safe and beneficial effects can be measured.

- The active microorganisms that comprise it must survive the acid environment of the stomach and the digestive process.

- The components must be able to colonize the intestine and form a protective barrier against pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Staphylococcus, Candida, etc..

- It will help metabolize carbohydrates and absorb vitamins in the intestinal tract. Alter, balance and strengthen the intestinal flora while stimulating the body?s natural defenses.

- Has to induce local or systemic effects beneficial to host health, beyond the purely nutritional.

- Should reduce and prevent the risk of disease as well as improving health. These criteria are fulfilled basically foods containing lactobacilli and bifidobacteria microorganisms from the fermentation of milk which is known generically as lactic acid bacteria.

In regard to various species of lactobacilli are greatly varying properties of adherence to intestinal epithelium and its colonization patterns, ie differing widely in their probiotic properties and beneficial effects. Among the most widely used in the food industry include lactobacillus bulgaricus, acidophilus, casei, plantarum fermentum and. But besides the lactobacillus, other germs have demonstrated therapeutic potential of a few species including Saccharomyces boulardii, a yeast-, Bifidobacterium and Streptococcus thermophilus. The key is to achieve or not survive the effects of gastric juices. It is precisely at this point that scientists do not agree on what are probiotics and what not.

Regarding the importance of the activity of probiotics is true that scientists have proven beneficial effect on conditions such as diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, vaginitis, urinary tract infections, immune disorders, constipation, flu, lactose intolerance , hypercholesterolemia and food allergy, among other ailments. Properties are attributed to slow even malignant tumors in the colon if the microorganism population level is high enough, less than 10 million cells per gram of contents, to exercise its function properly. It is therefore imperative that the daily intake of probiotics is to maintain high levels in the digestive ecosystem.
