MEXICO CITY ? Mexican paleontologists say they have uncovered 50 vertebrae believed to be a full dinosaur tail in the northern desert of Coahuila state.

The National Institute of Anthropology and History says the tail is about 15 feet (5 meters) long and resembles that of a hadrosaur or crested duckbill dinosaur.

An institute Monday says it's not yet possible to confirm the species, but it would be the first full tail of that kind in Mexico.

Paleontologist Felisa Aguilar says they uncovered roughly half of the dinosaur, which was 36 feet (12 meters) long and lived about 72 million years ago.

The excavation took 20 days in the municipality of General Cepeda in the northern state that borders Texas.

The paleontologists, working with Mexico's National Autonomous University, also found hip bones.

Researchers find evidence that genetic changes play a role in resistance to deadly disease

Researchers have long understood that genetics can play a role in how susceptible people are to contracting cholera, but a team of Harvard scientists is now uncovering evidence of genetic changes that might also help protect some people from contracting the deadly disease.

Based on genetic data gathered from hundreds of people in Bangladesh, a research team made up of Harvard faculty and scientists from the Broad Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital were able to a number of areas in the genome some of which are responsible for certain immune system functions, while others are related to fluid loss that appear to be related to cholera resistance. Later tests showed genetic differences between people who had contracted the disease and those who had been exposed, but did not become ill. Their results are described in a paper published earlier this month in Science Translational Medicine.

"This study is exceptionally exciting for us because it shows the power of this approach," said Associate Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology Pardis Sabeti, one of two senior co-authors of the paper. "This is the first time we've taken a genomic-wide approach to understanding cholera resistance. But it's a first step, and there is a lot of exploration to go from here. For a disease that's so ancient and widespread there's very little that's known about host immunity."

The hope, Sabeti added, is that by better understanding why some people appear to be immune, it will help in our efforts to develop vaccines and therapies, so outbreaks like those that occurred in recent years in Haiti and Africa might one-day be avoided.

"It is a very scary disease," she said. "We now have treatments with oral rehydration therapy, but it is still devastating, and in extreme cases, cholera can kill in hours."

"We also haven't been able to develop a particularly effective vaccine," added Elinor Karlsson, a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, the first author of the paper. "The vaccine that's available wears off after a few years, whereas people who are exposed to the disease develop a long-lasting immunityand nobody is quite sure why that is. This research is another way of tackling that problem, and it's a way no one has come at it before."

To understand the genetic differences between those with and without resistance, researchers first gathered genetic data on 42 family groups called "trios" that included a mother, father and child. Using that data, researchers identified more than 300 areas of the genome that appeared to be under pressure due to natural selection, suggesting that genes in those regions might be adapting to deal with the threat of cholera.

"We found 305 areas or about two percent of the genome that appeared to be under selection," Karlsson said. "That's great, but unfortunately, all our tests can tell us is that a region is under selection, it doesn't tell us why."

To find those answers, Karlsson turned to a process called "gene set enrichment" testing to determine whether any particular groups of genes showed up in those regions more often than others.

"We found two strong patterns," Karlsson said. "We found a whole set of genes that are related to a gene called IKBKG, which plays a key role in immunity. But what we found was not the gene itself, but a whole group of genes that regulate IKBKG. We also found a whole set of genes for potassium channels, which are the channels in the walls of our cells that regulate fluid loss.

"What's interesting is that it shows what a huge pressure cholera has been on this population," she added. "You could be selecting for anything in there skin color, hair color or even other diseases but because cholera was a big enough force, we could pick it out just by doing this kind of testing."

Armed with that data, researchers then performed a comparative study examining the specific genetic regions in more than 100 patients who were sick with cholera and others who had been exposed to the disease, but had not become sick. The results, Karlsson said, showed differences between the two groups.

"The region that had the biggest signal that suggested the region was under pressure from natural selection, also had the biggest difference between people who were sick and who were not sick today," Karlsson said.

Going forward, Karlsson said, researchers hope to conduct wider studies of the genetic differences between people who are susceptible and those who appear to be immune in the hope of identifying precisely which genes are involved, and the pathways involved in resistance.

"We have narrowed it down to a few genes, but the problem is that these are genes that people have not paid a great deal of attention to before," Karlsson said. "There's not a whole lot of description out there about them, so it's hard to know which one might be the best candidate for study."

Why many abortion clinics in Texas may stay open despite new law

By Lisa Maria Garza

DALLAS (Reuters) - Most of the Texas clinics that abortion rights advocates predict will close because of a new law requiring tighter health and safety standards likely will remain open - at least if history is any guide.

Governor Rick Perry signed the new legislation on Thursday, capping a whirlwind month in which Texas became the center of a national campaign by anti-abortion activists to restrict when, by whom and where the procedure can be performed.

Included in the new Texas law are requirements that abortion clinics meet hospital-style health standards, ranging from installation of hands-free sinks to upgrades to ventilation systems. Supporters call the rules crucial safety standards.

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists opposed them, saying that they are "unnecessary and unsupported by scientific evidence."

The new laws in Texas and elsewhere have alarmed abortion rights advocates, who see them as an attempt to thwart the right to abortion granted by the Supreme Court in 1973.

In Texas, Planned Parenthood announced on Thursday that it was closing one of its 13 abortion clinics that provide abortions, citing the new law. The nation's largest abortion provider said the rules could force all but a handful of the 42 abortion facilities in Texas to close down.

But similar warnings in other states have not come to pass.

Twenty-six states have laws that require abortion clinics to meet varying levels of hospital standards, according to the Guttmacher Institute, which supports abortion rights. Pennsylvania, Virginia and Missouri passed strict health and safety rules similar to Texas, it said.

In those three states, however, most clinics were able to stay open after the laws passed, some by reallocating dollars to comply with building upgrades, according to abortion providers and state health department officials interviewed by Reuters.

"It seems like an exaggeration from the other side that access is going to be cut off," said Mallory Quigley, spokeswoman for the anti-abortion Susan B. Anthony list.

Elizabeth Nash, state issues manager for the Guttmacher Institute, which favors abortion rights but does research cited by both sides, said the new law will have an impact in Texas but maybe less than the worst fears.

"Clinics will close," she said. "But I can't say we are going to go down to six."

Of the 24 clinics in Pennsylvania prior to a tough new law in 2011, one closed voluntarily, according to the state health department. The state closed two others for serious violations including a freezer lined with frozen blood, and stained surgical instruments in dirty drawers, according to reports by state inspectors.

Two others were consolidated into a third clinic but maintained the same level of service to women as before, said Dr. W. Allen Hogge, chair of the Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences Department at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

All of the remaining 19 clinics are in compliance, said Pennsylvania health department spokeswoman Aimee Tysarczyk.

"To be honest, we weren't counting numbers as far as how many were going to close," said Micaiah Bilger, spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation, an anti-abortion group. "The purpose of the bill was to ensure basic health and safety standards for women that are going into these centers."

COMPLY OR CLOSE?

To remain open, some Pennsylvania clinics invested thousands of dollars to upgrade their facilities. Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania, for instance, said it spent about $400,000 to renovate two clinics after the state began implementing tougher standards in June 2012.

They installed hands-free sinks, new flooring and upgrades to heating, ventilation and air conditioning, said spokeswoman Maggie Groff.

"They had to spend large sums of money to comply that otherwise would have been put into patient care," Susan Frietsche, senior staff attorney at the Women's Law Project.

Only one clinic has closed in Virginia since a new law was implemented there earlier this year, the state health department said. No clinics have closed in Missouri because of a tough law passed there in 2007, abortion provider Planned Parenthood of Kansas and mid-Missouri said.

The national campaign to push for tighter restrictions on clinics gained momentum after the May conviction of a Philadelphia doctor, Kermit Gosnell, of murdering three babies born alive during abortions by severing their spinal cords.

Prosecutors in the case described his clinic as a "house of horrors" where recovery chairs were bloodstained and equipment broken.

The Gosnell case, Quigley said, shows "the abortion industry is not capable of policing itself."

Abortion rights activists said Gosnell was an exception among mostly safe and legal abortion providers.

In addition to the tough standards for clinics, the Texas law bans most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, requires doctors performing abortions to have hospital admitting privileges, and limits the use of the RU-486 drug to end pregnancies.

It requires all abortion facilities to meet the standards of "ambulatory surgical centers" that perform outpatient surgery. First trimester abortions, which account for most such procedures, rarely require surgery.

"What is frustrating to us, as physicians, are rules coming out in Texas and other states that are catching on like crazy but are not medically based. They are to shut down abortion facilities," said Dr. Anne Davis, consulting medical director with Physicians for Reproductive Health, a national organization of doctors supporting the right to abortion.

Planned Parenthood said on Thursday it was preparing to sue the state of Texas over the new law, a tactic they employed in Missouri when the state in 2007 passed legislation requiring clinics to meet outpatient surgery standards for most abortions.

The two sides reached a settlement in 2010 under which Missouri waived some rules for clinics that only performed first trimester abortions, thus avoiding closings, said Peter Brownlie, chief executive of Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri.

Westboro Baptist Church Spells ?Illiterate? Wrong On Viral Protest Flyer

Westboro Baptist Church

That awkward moment when Westboro Baptist Church spelled ?illiterate? wrong on a flyer protesting illiteracy.

As much as we all love to rag on our bigoted friends at the WBC, it?s hard to deny that they have thrived this long because they run a pretty well-oiled hate ship.

Westboro Baptist Church chugs along and even grows in influence much the same way your average conspiracy theory catches steam: There?s an answer for everything. Oh, this group of non-partisan experts illustrated why this conspiracy is flawed? They were bought off by the government. Oh, these individuals crucial to the conspiracy didn?t actually do ?xyz?? Then who did do ?xyz?? Huh? Huh?

It kind of the same with Westboro Baptist Church. God hates fags. How do you know? It says so in the Bible. It actually doesn?t, WBC. Try telling me that when you?re choking on hellfire. See what I mean?

So our only hope of catching Westboro Baptist Church up and trolling them with evidence that even they cannot deny is the occasional, petty grammatical error.

On this occasion, we have to give credit to BuzzFeed for managing to pore through an entire Westboro Baptist Church flyer (presumably while sober) on which the controversial religious group announce their intention to picket ?fag marriage? in Rhode Island.

They found an easy-to-miss spelling error about half-way down the flyer.

?IS THE UNITED STATES POPULATION ILLERATE? CAN?T YOU READ??

Yeah, we can read. We noticed you spelled ?illiterate? wrong.

Check out Westboro Baptist Church?s ?illiterate? flyer below:

A string of nearly a dozen apparently coordinated bombs and a shooting in cities across?Iraq?killed at least 32 and wounded dozens Sunday, extending a wave of violence that is raising fears of a return to widespread killing a decade after the US-led invasion.

Violence has spiked sharply in?Iraq?in recent months, with the death toll rising to levels not seen since 2008. Nearly 2,000 have been killed since the start of April.

Most of the car bombs hit Shiite-majority areas and were the cause of most of the casualties, killing 26. The blasts hit half a dozen cities and towns in the south and center of the country. There was no claim of responsibility for any of the attacks, but they bore the hallmark of al-Qaida in?Iraq, which uses car bombs, suicide bombers and coordinated attacks to target security forces, members of?Iraq's?Shiite majority, and others.

The blasts began when a parked car bomb went off early morning in the industrial area of the city of Kut, killing three people and wounding 14 others. That was followed by another car bomb outside the city targeted a gathering of construction workers that killed two and wounded 12, according to police.

In a teahouse hit by the blast, a blood-stained tribal headdress and slippers were strewn on the floor, along with overturned chair and couches. Kut is located 100 miles southeast of Baghdad.

In the oil-rich city of Basra by the Gulf coast in southern?Iraq, a car bomb exploded in a busy downtown street, police said. As police and rescuers rushed to the scene of the initial blast, the second car exploded. A total of six people were reported killed. Cleaners were seen brushing off debris of the car bomb that damaged nearby cars and shops.

About an hour later, two parked car bombs ripped through two neighborhoods in the southern city of Nasiriyah, 200 miles southeast of Baghdad, killing one and wounding 17, another police officer said.

And in the town of Mahmoudiya, 20 miles south of Baghdad, two civilians were killed and nine wounded when a car bomb went off in an open market.

In the Shiite holy city of Najaf, 100 miles south of Baghdad, a blast struck a produce market, killing eight and wounding 28. Afterwards, watermelons, tomatoes and apples were scattered on the ground where a bulldozer was loading charred and twisted stalls and cars into a lorry.

And in Madain, a roadside bomb and then a car bomb exploded, killing three and wounding 14. Madain is about 14 miles southeast of Baghdad.

Near Hillah, a car bomb exploded in a parking lot, killing one and wounding nine. Hillah is about 60 miles south of Baghdad.

The shooting happened near the restive northern city of Mosul. Police officials say gunmen attacked police guarding a remote stretch of an oil pipeline, killing four and wounding five. Mosul, some 225 miles northwest of Baghdad, has been the scene of some of the deadliest unrest outside of the Baghdad area in recent weeks.

In the northern city of Tuz Khormato, a roadside bomb targeted a passing police patrol, killing two policemen and wounding another, another police officer said. The town is about 130 miles north of Baghdad.

Medical officials confirmed the casualty figures. Officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they weren't allowed to release the information.

The attacks came a day after the leader of al-Qaida's?Iraq?arm, known as the Islamic State of?Iraq, defiantly rejected an order from the terror network's central command to stop claiming control over the organization's Syria affiliate, according to a message purportedly from him. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi's comments reveal his group's determination to link its own fight against the Shiite-led government in Baghdad with the cause of rebels trying to topple the Iran-backed Syrian regime.

easyJet to buy 135 single-aisle Airbus A320s

(AP) ? Budget carrier easyJet has agreed to purchase 135 single-aisle Airbus jets that will allow the European airline to pack in more passengers than it currently does.

The companies said Tuesday at the Paris Air Show that the British-based airline scooped up 35 current generation A320s and 100 A320neo's. At list prices, the order would cost $11.9 billion, but easyJet said it received deep discounts, as is typical. It has an option to buy another 100 of the new generation A320s.

The A320 seats about 180 people, compared to the 156-seat A319 that easyJet largely uses now. The company said the new planes are also more fuel efficient.

Smaller jet purchases dominated the last air show at Le Bourget two years ago; this year long-haul jets have staged a comeback.

Turkish PM defends his 'duty' to end protests

ISTANBUL (AP) ? Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Sunday it was his "duty" to order riot police to evict activists occupying an Istanbul park that became a center of defiance against his rule, even as the government crackdown continued across town with tear gas fired at protesters trying to regroup.

In a thunderous speech to hundreds of thousands of supporters in western Istanbul, Erdogan also railed against foreign media coverage of the unrest amid criticism over his government's handling of the protests that left his international image battered, and exposed deep rifts within Turkish society.

About 10 kilometers (six miles) away in central Istanbul, riot police fired tear gas and used water cannons on thousands of defiant protesters attempting to regroup and demonstrate again in the city's main Taksim Square. Clashes broke out in nearby neighborhoods with stone-throwing youths.

Protesters are angry over the eviction of overwhelmingly peaceful activists at Gezi Park, next to Taksim Square, who oppose government plans to rip down its trees and erect a replica Ottoman-era barracks. But the protests quickly spiraled into a widespread denunciation of what many say is Erdogan's increasingly authoritarian way of governing ? charges he vehemently denies.

Speaking to his supporters, Erdogan recalled telling Interior Ministry officials: "You are going to clear Gezi Park. We have reached an end. We cannot stand it anymore.' And as you know, yesterday the operation was carried out, and it was cleared."

"I did my duty as prime minister," he said, "Otherwise there would be no point in my being in office."

Police in uniform and plain clothes sealed off Taksim Square and Gezi Park, which riot police cleared of thousands of peaceful protesters in a swift but muscular operation Saturday evening. Crews worked through the night to remove all traces of a sit-in that started more than two weeks ago and became the focus of the strongest challenge to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in his 10 years in office.

Istanbul's governor, Huseyin Avni Mutlu, said the square was off-limits to the public for the time being, and nobody would be allowed to gather. A spokesman for the protesters vowed the group would retake Gezi Park.

"We will win Taksim Square again and we will win Taksim Gezi Park again," Alican Elagoz said.

Thousands of protesters trying to reach the area were stuck on side streets and in nearby neighborhoods in a blanket of tear gas. Stumbling to avoid the gas, they piled into nearby cafes and restaurants, where waiters clutched napkins to their faces.

Stone-throwing youths and riot police clashed in Istanbul's Sisli neighborhood next to the Taksim area. Television footage showed police deploying two water cannon trucks against the youths, standing near a flaming barricade blocking the street. Rocks littered the roadway.

The protests in Istanbul began as an environmental sit-in to prevent a development project at Gezi Park, but anger over a violent crackdown there on May 31 quickly spread to dozens of cities and spiraled into a broader expression of discontent.

The protests have left at least five people dead, including a police officer, according to a Turkish rights group, and more than 5,000 injured.

Teenage Johnny Galecki Learned How To Make Out From Milton Berle On 'Roseanne' Set (VIDEO)

Before he blew up on "The Big Bang Theory," Johnny Galecki was a part of another of television's biggest sitcoms. He reminisced about his time on the show "Roseanne" during his visit with David Letterman on "Late Show." One of the perks of being on a hit show was all the great guest stars Galecki got to meet, like the legendary Milton Berle.

Galecki said that Berle was 89-years old when he appeared on the show, and he had some grandfatherly wisdom for the young man. Okay, perhaps "grandfatherly" isn't the right term for what he taught Galecki. He had advice on how to make out.

"He said ... you look them in the eye, and then you look them in the mouth, and then you look them in the eye and then you move in. And it kind of worked!" Galecki told Letterman. "I was nearly seduced by an 89-year-old man."

The blog "Seriously? OMG! WTF?" got a huge kick out of Galecki's revelation, as well as his hiatus beard.

Tune in to "Late Show with David Letterman" every weeknight at 11:35 p.m. ET on CBS.

(AP) ? With broad support from Republicans and Democrats, a House committee Wednesday approved legislation to tackle the growing problem of sexual assault in the armed forces by taking away the power of military commanders to overturn convictions in rape and assault cases.

The bill passed by the House Armed Services Committee also requires that anyone found guilty of a sex-related crime receive a punishment that includes, at a minimum, a dismissal from military service or a dishonorable discharge.

"The word should go out clearly and strongly that if you commit a sexual assault in the military, you are out," said Rep. Michael Turner, R-Ohio. Turner and Rep. Niki Tsongas, D-Mass., wrote many of the provisions in the House bill.

By stripping commanders of their longstanding authority to reverse or change court-martial convictions, lawmakers are aiming to shake up the military's culture and give victims the confidence that if they report a crime their allegations won't be discounted and they won't face retaliation.

Frustration has been building on Capitol Hill for weeks over the Defense Department's failure to staunch sexual assaults in the ranks.

The Pentagon estimated in a recent report that as many as 26,000 military members may have been sexually assaulted last year, up from an estimated 19,000 assaults in 2011, based on an anonymous survey of military personnel. While the number of sexual assaults that members of the military actually reported rose 6 percent to 3,374 in 2012, thousands of victims were still unwilling to come forward despite new oversight and assistance programs aimed at curbing the crimes, the report said.

"The military has obviously been unable to solve this problem independently," Tsongas said.

The legislation is part of a sweeping defense policy bill that the Republican-led Armed Services Committee pulled together during a daylong session. The $638 billion measure for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1 included $86 billion for the war in Afghanistan as well as contentious provisions on the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and nuclear weapons.

The full House is expected to vote on the bill next week.

Despite the congressional clamor to cut the deficit, the committee bill rejects several Pentagon attempts to save money. It spares a version of the Global Hawk unmanned aircraft, rebuffs attempts to increase health care fees for retirees and their dependents, and opposes another round of domestic base closures.

In fact, the panel didn't just say no to more base closings, it went as far as including a provision barring the Pentagon from even planning for another round.

That drew ridicule from Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., who offered an amendment essentially eliminating the prohibition on the Pentagon thinking ahead. Smith said it made no sense to tie the Pentagon's hands as it faces smaller budgets.

"I don't think this committee has the luxury of being so darn parochial anymore, to say every single time any one of the (military) services comes into our state and says, 'Look, we've got to rearrange,' that we're going to fight tooth-and-nail to stop them," Smith said.

But Smith's amendment was soundly rejected, 44-18. Several Republicans argued that they didn't want the Pentagon wasting time planning for an effort that Congress would never accept.

The committee approved an amendment to provide $140 million as a down payment to install ground-based interceptors at a new missile defense site on the East Coast to expand the country's defenses from a potential ballistic missile attack by Iran. The measure would require the site at a yet-to-be-determined location to be ready by 2018.

Overall, the bill fails to acknowledge the automatic, across-the-board spending cuts that Washington has grudgingly accepted. The cuts of $41 billion hit the Pentagon on March 1 and forced the military to furlough workers and scale back training.

The Pentagon faces deeper reductions in projected spending of close to $1 trillion over a decade, but the bill did not reflect that reality for next fiscal year. The Pentagon likely will have to cut $54 billion to meet the numbers dictated by the so-called sequester.

The committee's action on sexual assaults came one day after a high-profile Senate hearing during which senators grilled military leaders about the scourge in their ranks. The leaders conceded that they have been less than diligent in dealing with the problem, but pushed back against far-reaching legislation to give the authority to level charges to a military prosecutor rather than the victim's commander.

Military leaders are more receptive to the House provisions, would strip commanders of the discretion to reverse a court-martial ruling, except in cases involving minor offenses. Commanders also would be barred from reducing a guilty finding by a court-martial to guilty of a lesser offense.

The measure also would require that anyone found guilty of rape, sexual assault, forcible sodomy or an attempt to commit any of those offenses receive a punishment that includes a dismissal from military service or a dishonorable discharge.

The legislation eliminates the five-year statute of limitations on trial by court-martial for sexual assault and sexual assault of a child. It also establishes the authority for military legal counsel to provide legal assistance to victims of sex-related offenses and requires enhanced training for all military and civilian attorneys involved in sex-related cases.

Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., applauded the committee's action. But she said she would continue to push for even broader changes to better protect victims.

Speier has introduced separate legislation that would take the reporting and investigation of sexual assaults out of the military's normal chain of command. The bill would create an autonomous Sexual Assault Oversight and Response Office comprised of civilian and military experts. Speier said she will offer her bill as an amendment on the House floor.

"Unless we increase the number of prosecutions and the number of convictions, they we have not achieved the goal," she said. "We have not sanitized the military of sexual predators."

LG's 5-inch HD Oxide mobile display has a 1mm-slim bezel, we go eyes-on at SID

LG's 5inch HD Oxide mobile display has a 1mmslim bezel, we go eyeson at SID

LG's flexible OLED display is just one of the company's many panels on show here at SID. Our next stop in the booth tour is a 5-inch HD prototype, which uses TFT Oxide technology for low power consumption and a super-slim profile. Like the 5-inch flexible panel, this guy sports a 1mm bezel, and a rep told us it utilizes IPS technology to offer wide viewing angles. The model you see here is rated at 250 nits, though LG expects a significantly higher brightness count by the time the panel makes it to market. As for when that will happen, "ASAP" is the only answer we received. Hit up our photo gallery below for a closer look.

Algerian president leaves Paris military hospital

PARIS (AP) ? Officials say Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has left the French military hospital where he has been treated for nearly a month and transferred to another facility.

Tuesday's brief statement by the defense ministry health service said Bouteflika "left Val-de-Grace hospital today to go to another establishment to continue his recovery." The statement didn't identify that facility or even say whether it is in France, and officials were unavailable for comment.

The 78-year-old Bouteflika suffered a mini-stroke in Algeria on April 27, and he was rushed to Val-de-Grace hospital in Paris.

On Monday the head of Algeria's main Islamist political party called for the ailing president to appear on television to dispel rumors over his health.

Earlier, an editor of two Algerian newspapers said their publication was blocked by the government after he rejected an order to remove a story that claimed Bouteflika was in a coma.

A look ahead: State golf tournaments today at Nob North, Dalton ...

In football, it is the home-field advantage. On the hardwood, it is the home-court advantage. No matter what the sport, familiarity does not breed contempt. It breeds an advantage.

Today in the Georgia High School Association?s Class 4A golf state tournaments, local schools should have an advantage. And after the weekend rains soaked both Nob North Golf Course in Cohutta and Dalton Golf and Country Club ? particularly on Sunday ? that advantage could be a lot bigger.

The girls championship will be held at Nob North, which is the home course for Northwest Whitfield, one of 15 teams in today?s field. Dalton, the Region 7-4A champion, and Southeast Whitfield, which features region medalist Megan Collins, will also play at Nob North, and both of those teams also have plenty of experience on the Ron Kirby-Gary Player design.

DGCC will host the boys tournament and is the home course of the Dalton Catamounts, who captured the Region 7-4A tournament title there last month. Northwest?s boys will also compete on the Kirby Griffith-designed course.

While local teams have all been playing the courses frequently since the region tournament, other teams from around the state have had less experience on the two layouts, and Sunday?s practice rounds were washed out.

?Obviously for those people who haven?t played (the courses), they are at a disadvantage, said Jim McGrew, Northwest?s boys coach and the tournament coordinator. ?But at the same time, it isn?t going to play anything like it has been playing for the last two weeks. Even if people played on Friday or Saturday, it is going to be a much different golf course.?

Play was scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.?on both courses today, but the rains could push the start back to 11 a.m. in order to get both courses prepared to handle the play, McGrew said. The last groups are scheduled to tee off two hours after the first groups, with the pace of play expected to be between four and four-and-a-half hours.

Spectators are allowed on both courses, but fans will have to walk to follow their favorite golfers unless they have a disability, the only reason they?ll be permitted a cart.

All told, there are 30 high school golfers from Whitfield and Murray counties competing in state tournaments across Georgia today. In Class 3A, North Murray?s girls will play at Chateau Elan in Braselton, while the Mountaineers? Colby Hipp will play as an individual at the Class 3A boys tournament at Reunion Golf Course in Hochston. Murray County?s Amber Lewis will play in the Class 2A girls tournament at Hawk?s Ridge Golf Course in Vidalia, while the Indians? Dylan Hubbard will compete in the Class 2A boys tournament at Rocky Creek Golf Club, also in Vidalia.

Per GHSA rules and regulations, all courses will be par 72 and play approximately 5,500 yards for the girls and 6,500 yards for the boys.

In the Class 4A boys tournament, Dalton and Northwest will compete with 14 other teams for the title and eight other individual qualifiers in the medalist race. Dalton senior golfer William Duffie, who shot a 3-over-par 75 in the region tournament at DGCC, said having more course knowledge will certainly come into play.

?It gives us an advantage, definitely,? he said. ?It is difficult going somewhere else and playing a different course, but as long as you get those practice rounds in you can get a pretty good feel. Having played the country club so many times, you have a feel for getting out of trouble. We know where to miss, the putts you have to make and the holes where you have to be either long of short in order to get a low score.?

The rains will certainly make the courses play longer than usual, with the damp grounds taking roll off of drives and forcing players to use longer irons for approach shots to greens. However, balls will tend to stick on the greens a lot better, allowing players to fire directly at pins.

?You have to feel like anytime you are playing at home on a course you know that you have an advantage,? McGrew said. ?But you have a lot of quality golfers and they are used to playing on courses that they don?t know very well.?

Duffie and his teammates shot a team score of 315 to win the region title by a stroke over Heritage-Catoosa. However, Cats coach Chad Jordan knows that score will not bring home a state title.

?I think something around 295 to 300 will win it,? Jordan said. ?Anywhere around 305 to 310 will be in the top five. Everyone is going to have to be on their game and play their best. We will have an opportunity because of how well we know the course.?

Columbus had the lowest region championship total, led by Charlie Flowers? 2-under 70 for a team score of 297. Richmond Academy also broke 300 during region tournament play with a 299, led by Grayson Sigg?s 72. Heritage-Catoosa?s Sport Allmond was the medalist at the country club for the Region 7-4A tournament with a 73.

In addition to Duffie, Dalton will send Chris Kazmierski, Landon Hicks, Allen Behr, Cole Calfee and Jacob Brown to the course in the six-play, four-count format. Dalton won the region title with consistency throughout the lineup. In addition to Duffie?s 75, Kazmierski, Hicks and Behr all shot 80.

Northwest?s boys were led by Sam Speights and Ethan Hayes, who each shot 79 in region play. Chad Flanders and Silas Ledford each finished at 82. Tyler Clayton and Chandler Lomax will also compete today. The Bruins had a score of 322, a mark that fell short of the team?s expectations coming into region. McGrew said his team is happy to have another shot.

?They are disappointed they didn?t play as well as they could at region, and I am really excited about the seniors getting the opportunity to finally play in the state tournament,? he said.

Dalton?s girls won the region title with a team score of 273 ? Mable McKone led the Lady Cats with an 88 ? in the four-play, three-score format. Carson Roberts, Ashleigh Peters and Olga Fouche will also play for the Lady Cats today.

Northwest was second at region with a 286 that was paced by Marlee Bingham?s 90. Alicia Cole, Dallas Coker and Emilee McKinney will also play for the Lady Bruins today. Collins paced Southeast with an 82 at region for a team score of 319. Bethany Reddix, Hannah Dempsey and Victoria Bailey will play for the Lady Raiders as well.

Individually, all of the golfers will be looking to duplicate the feat of current Armstrong-Atlantic State University and former Dalton golfer Brendi Rockholt, who was the Class 3A state medalist last year.

Collins would seem to have the best shot of going low. A two-time region champion ? she also won a region title as a sophomore ? Collins is a three-sport senior standout who is likely playing her final competitive round of golf. At the region tournament, Collins indicated that if she did play a sport in college it would likely be volleyball ? she was also a basketball standout ? but she was even undecided about that.

?Looking at the rest of the players in the field, the medalist will probably be in the mid-70s,? Southeast coach Todd Murray said. ?We have been playing a lot of rounds at Nob North, and Megan is certainly capable of shooting that score. I hope she will end her career with something like that.?

Among Class 4A girls competitors, Carrollton?s Sydney Needham had the lowest score in region tournament play, shooting a 2-under-par 70 on her home course.

North Murray?s girls lineup, which features a pair of golfers who are headed off to play collegiately after graduation this year, are the lone area team outside of Class 4A to make its respective state tournament.

Region 5-3A medalist Jocelyn Blair ?a recent signee with Reinhardt University ? shot an 85 to lead the Lady Mountaineers to the region title with a 278. Dara Dople ? will play next year at Maryville (Tenn.) College ? Tillie Hughes and Hali Sheram will also play today in Braselton.

North Murray coach Keith Robinette said one of the biggest advantages for Blair will be the players she is paired with.

?We will be paired with Buford and White County and they have some quality golfers and that will push her,? Robinette said. ?Jocelyn wants to draw the best competition and wants to see how she stacks up. She will thrive off of that competition and it will push her lower.?

Hipp qualified for the boys tournament by shooting a 74 for second place individually at the region tournament. Since the medalist was on a team which qualified for state, Hipp earned one of eight individual invitations to the tournament.

The same is true for Murray County?s Lewis and Hubbard. Lewis shot a 98 at the Region 7-2A tournament and was the lowest scorer on a non-qualifying team, while Hubbard?s 89 earned him the same kind of invitation to state.

And here?s a look ahead at what else is happening in local sports:

? The prep sports year closes for the area with today?s state golf tournaments, but two schools will also hold their spring football games to close out two weeks of practice for that sports.

Northwest plays its intrasquad scrimmage at 6:30 p.m., while Southeast does the same at 7:30. Fans will have the chance to see what next season might look like as new players step up for those who will soon be graduating.

? It?s an athletic pursuit that could save your life ? or someone else?s ? one day: swimming.

Two area options for swimming lessons are the Swim America program at Dalton High School?s pool and Bradley Wellness Center. Summer is a great time to learn to enjoy the water safely, and you can learn more about how to sign up for lessons by going online to our Local Sports Calendar at daltonnow.com/events and looking under the ?Instruction? heading.

? Finally, in the coming weeks The Daily Citizen will present its annual all-area team honors for spring sports and we?ll also begin revealing this year?s field for our third annual Southeastern 7-on-7 Championship. That football tournament is scheduled for July 13-14 in Dalton, but we?ll be profiling the field of teams starting next Monday.
