GOP's Santorum fighting to contend in leadoff Iowa

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Rick Santorum isn't going down without a fight. In fact, that fight might be lifting him up.

The Republican presidential candidate who may have logged more miles than any other this year is more likely these days to be grinding it out on the campaign trail than trumpeting the buzz he's stirring among Iowa's conservative voters a week before the Jan. 3 presidential caucuses.

"We feel good," Santorum, a long-overlooked candidate in the GOP race, said with a thin smile as he left a midday campaign stop Tuesday in Mason City, seemingly hesitant - at least publicly - to buy into the notion that he's on the rise.

There are hurdles. His cash-strapped campaign has only just started running TV ads, and his organization is small in a state whose contests rely on the ability of campaigns to turn out a slew of supporters.

Still, there's evidence that Iowa Republicans, many of whom are still undecided and looking for a conservative candidate, may be starting to give the former Pennsylvania senator a look at just the right time.

"Rick Santorum could be a real surprise," said former Dallas County GOP Chairman Rob Taylor.

In recent days, Santorum's crowds have started growing as he rallies conservatives with a pit bull's pugnaciousness, and just a touch of anger.

He has earned the support of a number of key backers of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who won the 2008 Republican caucuses. They include former gubernatorial candidate Bob Vander Plaats, conservative Sioux City radio host Sam Clovis and some influential evangelical pastors.

He landed the endorsement Tuesday of evangelical conservative activists Alex and Brett Harris, founders of Huck's Army, a national group that supported Huckabee's 2008 campaign.

"He's the only candidate in this race I trust," said Chuck Laudner, a veteran Iowa GOP operative who introduced Santorum to more than 100 party activists on Santorum's fourth trip to Mason City. "And he's a fighter."

As if to prove the point, Santorum launched into a speech filled with pokes at the national media and his rivals. For 90 minutes, he tore into President Barack Obama, Hollywood and moderate Republicans - and, by implication, rival Mitt Romney.

While Santorum's profile in Congress as a social-issues crusader bought him entree with influential evangelical conservatives in Iowa, it's his unhesitating attack on liberals that seems to be fueling his rise in internal polls by rival campaigns.

"Let's look at colleges and universities," Santorum said in the ballroom of the restored Frank Lloyd Wright Park Inn Hotel on Mason City's town square. "They've become indoctrination centers for the left. Should we be subsidizing that?"

Santorum tossed out Harvard University's motto, "Veritas," Latin for truth. "They haven't seen truth at Harvard in 100 years."

Santorum refers to Obama as a "radical." Just as easily, though, he calls his own party's leaders "the good old guys you can count on to sell out in the end."

Even in entertaining questions from voters, he is frank and at times pointed.

"No, you're missing my point," he told Mason City Republican Julia Jones, a retired factory worker, as he tried to explain Social Security.

Jones, who walked into the event weighing Santorum and Texas Gov. Rick Perry, liked what she heard - and decided to support Santorum.

"He doesn't soften the edges, but he doesn't talk down to you either," Jones said. "He's just in-depth."

Surveys record 'brainless fish'

Scotland's biggest horse mussel bed and a "faceless and brainless" fish-like creature were recorded during government-backed surveys this year.

The work covered almost 2,200 square miles - equivalent to an area one and a quarter times the size of the Cairngorms National Park.

The Scottish government has hailed the finds made during the surveys.

WWF Scotland said the results highlighted the need to better protect the marine environment.

Scottish Natural Heritage and Edinburgh's Heriot-Watt University were among organisations that carried out the work.

Underwater video was shot and acoustic and 3D images were used in the surveys.

Vessels from Marine Scotland, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) and the Northern Lighthouse Board were also involved.

Several rare species were recorded.

Off the west coast, fan mussels were found. Growing to up to 48cm long, the mussels are Scotland's largest sea shell.

Around the Small Isles more than 100 specimens of marine life were noted.

Off Tankerness on Orkney, the government said the prehistoric "faceless and brainless" amphioxus was recorded.

The rarely-seen species was regarded as a modern representative of the first animals that evolved a backbone, the Scottish government said.

With a nerve cord down its back, the fish does not have a clearly defined face or brain.

The largest horse mussel bed in Scotland was recorded near Noss Head in Caithness.

The molluscs stabilise seabeds, which in turn provides habitat for other species, and can live up to 50 years.

Other finds included flame shell beds in Loch Linnhe in Argyll and new communities of northern feather star off the Sound of Canna.

Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead described the finds as "weird and wonderful".

He added: "The waters around Scotland are rich in such fascinating biodiversity and it's our responsibility to protect this fragile environment.

"That's why we have ramped up our marine survey work, with plans being prepared for new surveys in 2012 to further our knowledge of what lies beneath Scotland's seas."

'Future generations'

Susan Davies, director of policy and advice with Scottish Natural Heritage, said Scotland's seas were a "fantastic asset".

She added: "The findings from these surveys will help us to manage them sustainably and ensure future generations can also enjoy the benefits of a healthy and diverse marine environment."

WWF Scotland's head of policy, Dr Dan Barlow, said the surveys had confirmed that the seas and coasts provided important habitats for wildlife.

He said: "From helping inform the appropriate deployment of marine renewables?to supporting the roll out of a network of Marine Protected Areas, these survey findings will prove invaluable in helping ensure the recovery of Scotland's seas.

"It is important that the government builds on this survey work to further our knowledge of the marine environment."

Childhood hypersensitivity linked to OCD

ScienceDaily (Dec. 27, 2011) ? In childhood, rituals like regular schedules for meal, bath, and bed times are a healthy part of behavioral development. But combined with oral and tactile sensitivities, such as discomfort at the dentist or irritation caused by specific fabrics, these rituals could be an early warning sign of adult Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

According to Prof. Reuven Dar of Tel Aviv University's Department of Psychology, hypersensitivity and excessive adherence to childhood rituals may foreshadow the onset of OCD as the child ages. He first suspected the link while working with OCD patients who reported sensitivity to touch and taste as children. Now, in the first comprehensive study of its kind, Prof. Dar and his fellow researchers have established a direct correlation between sensory processing -- the way the nervous system manages incoming sensory information -- and ritualistic and obsessive-compulsive behaviors.

The study, which appears in the Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry, suggests that when children experience heightened levels of sensitivity, they develop ritualistic behaviors to better cope with their environment. In the long term, this is one potential pathway to OCD.

Connecting the behavioral dots

Two studies were devised to map the connection between sensory processing, rituals, and OCD. In the first, parents of kindergarten children were asked to complete three questionnaires on their child's behaviour -- their level of ritualism, such as the need to repeat certain acts or to order objects in a particular way; their level of anxiety, with questions relating to reaction to strangers, worrying about outcomes of events, and attachment to family members; and last, their reactions to everyday sensory events such as being touched or exposed to unusual tastes or smells.

In the second study, the researchers asked 314 adult participants to answer surveys online in relation to their OCD tendencies, their anxiety levels, and their past and current sensitivity to oral and tactile stimulation.

Results from both studies indicated a strong connection between compulsive tendencies and hypersensitivity. In children, hypersensitivity was an indicator of ritualism, whereas in adults it was related to OCD symptoms. As a whole, these findings provide preliminary support for the idea that such sensitivities are a precursor to OCD symptoms. When children are extremely sensitive to certain types of touch or smell, they can feel that they are being attacked, or that the environment is threatening them, Prof. Dar believes. Ritualism could develop as a defence mechanism, helping these children to regain a sense of control, which is also a symptom of adults with OCD.

Identifying the turning point

Next Prof. Dar hopes to conduct a longitudinal study to better understand the connection between hypersensitivity in childhood and adult OCD, following a large sample of children who experience oral and tactile sensitivities through to adulthood.

Of course, Prof. Dar says, all children have particular habits and preferences, and they're not all precursors to OCD. So what should parents watch for to correctly characterize normal and potentially pathological behavior? "If you see that a child is very rigid with rituals, becoming anxious if unable to engage in this behavior, it is more alarming," he explains. Also, age is a factor. A habit exhibited by a five- or six-year-old is not necessarily a predictor of OCD. If the same behavior continues to the ages of eight and above, it could be a warning sign, especially if accompanied by anxiety or distress.

Missouri Tigers Basketball Look Like 'Potential Top Two Seed' For Upcoming NCAA Tournament

Frank Haith has the Missouri Tigers men?s basketball team on a roll and now it seems that everyone is taking notice. Not only have the Tigers moved into the top 10 nationally and placed yet another team alongside Baylor and Kansas in the spotlight from the Big 12, but they?ve now created another power this season in what is becoming a very crowded conference schedule. Andy Katz has taken notice and says the Tigers are among the most impressive teams in the nation right now.

?The Tigers outlasted Illinois in their annual game in St. Louis,? said Katz. ?The Tigers continue to look the part of a top 10 team and a potential top two seed in the NCAA tournament. Missouri got pushed as hard as it has this season by Illinois, but still prevailed late by making the right decisions.?

That?s high praise for Haith?s team, but with incredible scorers like Marcus Denmon and Kim English among others lighting up opposing defenses, it?s hard to believe it?s not true. If the Tigers earn a No. 2 seed at season?s end, it will mean that Frank Haith pulled off one of the best coaching jobs in the country and the awards will come rolling in.

US teen, 2 others found dead in western Mexico (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? The body of a U.S. teenager has been found in the trunk of a burned-out car in western Mexico along with the bodies of two other youths.

Prosecutors in Michoacan state say the car holding the remains of the three young men was found on a roadside on Christmas Eve.

The other two victims were Mexican men aged 21 and 24. All three were from or had family in the nearby village of Quiringuicharo, Michoacan.

An employee of the prosecutors' office who was not authorized to be quoted by name said Tuesday that the U.S. teen has been identified as 18-year-old Alexis Uriel Marron.

The office had no information on his home town, but the Chicago Tribune reported he was from the Chicago area.

Obama rakes in campaign cash (Daily Caller)

The re-election campaign of President Obama and the Democratic National Committee are on track to net $60 million for the fourth quarter of the year, Reuters reports.

Obama had already raised roughly $155 million through September in an effort to raise more than $750 million for next November?s election.

?Enthusiasm for the White House?s policies has been steadily increasing and it will keep increasing,? major Democratic fundraiser Steven Cohen told the news service.

According to Cohen, the GOP?s bungled handling of the payroll tax fight is inspiring contributors to give more to Obama?s re-election campaign.

?Among the people who I have talked to, they are seeing a real demonstration of the president?s commitment to stand his ground,? he said.

The campaign had hoped to bring in $55 million last quarter. Instead they raised $70 million, even though last summer?s debt ceiling fight had forced President Obama to stay in Washington and cancel fundraisers in other parts of the country.

The 2012 election is already on its way to becoming the most expensive in history, with Obama expected to raise more than the record $750 million he had in the bank in 2008. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, among the front-runners for the GOP nomination, is expected to raise at least $20 million this quarter.

China require microblogs to get users' real names (AP)

BEIJING ? Beijing authorities on Friday ordered Internet microblogs to require users to register with their real names, a tightening of rules aimed at controlling China's rapidly growing social networks.

An announcement posted online said all microblog companies registered in the capital had to enforce real name registration within three months.

The rules, jointly issued by the Beijing government, police and Internet management office, apparently apply to all 250 million users of the hugely popular Twitter-like service Weibo.com, regardless of location, because its operator, Chinese Web portal Sina Corp., is headquartered in Beijing.

Sina rival Tencent Holdings is based in the southern city of Shenzhen. It wasn't immediately clear whether the company's microblog service would have to comply with the same rules.

China had more than 485 million Internet users as of the end of June, the most of any country in the world.

Government officials warned in October that tighter new guidelines for social media sites were coming. Officials said then they were concerned about people using the Internet to spread lies and rumors. But the government is also clearly worried about the use of Weibo and other sites to mobilize potentially destabilizing protest movements.

The new rules explicitly forbid use of microblogging to "incite illegal assembly." Public protests are illegal in China and are a concern for the Communist leadership.

Microblogs helped mobilize 12,000 people in the northeastern city of Dalian to successfully demand the relocation of a petrochemical factory and served as an outlet for public anger after a crash on the showcase high-speed rail system in which at least 40 people died. They also have given a national platform to a handful of independent candidates who have run this year for local legislative councils.

Mark Natkin, managing director of Marbridge Consulting, which is based in Beijing and specializes in China's telecommunications and IT sectors, said announcing the rules in Beijing first could be a way of testing their impact in a limited area before expanding them to cover the rest of the country.

He said the system would inevitably rein in China's microblogs. "Having a real name system will make people much more cautious about what they post," he said.

China blocked Twitter and Facebook after they were instrumental in anti-government protests in Iran two years ago, and instead encouraged homegrown alternatives in the apparent belief that domestic companies would be more responsive to government demands.

It remains to be seen whether China's new rules could drive some people away from domestic services. Tech-savvy Chinese are still able to access Twitter and Facebook by using special software that circumvents the government's firewall.

"Real name registration is sadly predictable, but very hard to implement, or if implemented is futile anyway as users will just shift to other platforms," said Duncan Clark, managing director of BDA China Ltd., a Beijing research firm.

Review: There's no saving 'Chipwrecked' Chipmunks (AP)

Puns like these would be unforgivable coming from a human. From high-pitched rodents, they prompt calls for an exterminator.

It starts with the title: "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked," the third in the noxiously contemporary series of new Chipmunks films. Following 2009's "Squeakquel," "Chipwrecked," as a title, is actually rather subtle and demure.

But like the earlier two, "Chipwrecked" is full of the cheapest kind of pop culture references. Here is Alvin aping James Bond with a tail "shaken, not stirred," a suggestion to follow the Chipmunks on "Critter" and, gulp, a Charlie Sheen-ism of "winning."

This latest Chipmunks film, directed by Mike Mitchell ("Shrek Forever After") is aimed at a slightly younger demographic than the prior movies (it's rated G), and perhaps shallow references like these are enough to delight youngsters. But I doubt it. And besides, I wonder if parents would really want stale, cringe-worthy expressions like "Awkward!" instilled in another generation.

In "Chipwrecked," the Chipmunks' father figure, Dave Seville (Jason Lee, looking vaguely hostage-like) is taking his diminutive computer-generated friends on a vacation cruise en route to the Grammy-esque International Music Awards.

If you haven't followed the two earlier films, the Chipmunks, that 1950s novelty creation by Ross Bagdasarian Sr., have been restyled as tiny pop stars who burst into song-and-dance routines like a sped-up, annoying version of "Glee." Alvin (Justin Long), Simon (Matthew Gray Gubler and Alan Tudyk) and Theodore (Jesse McCartney) were in the last film joined by the Chipettes: Brittany (Christina Applegate), Jeanette (Anna Faris) and Eleanor (Amy Poehler).

All return here, but don't mind the voice credits: They all sound the same.

The theme is troublemaking and overzealous parenting. Alvin's brash misbehaving leads to the chipmunks thrown overboard and washing up on a deserted island. Searching for them are Dave and the chipmunks' old rival, a former music executive played by David Cross (who can only do only so much to help).

On the remote jungle island, they search for clues and uncover a vast conspiracy that stretches across multiple planes of time. Oops, that was "Lost." In "Chipwrecked," Alvin learns to be responsible, a fellow castaway (Jenny Slate) hunts for gold and Simon develops a French accent after being bitten by a spider.

"Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked," a 20th Century Fox release, is rated G. Running time: 87 minutes. One and a half stars out of four.

Long-term Care And Attention Insurance For Retirees | FC Safe Kids

Locals within Jackson, Mississippi are together with the foreboded increase within cost of care for this reason many of them aspire into their solutions. ?That essentially leaves you many choices. Complete details on the benefits, long term care insurance partner cost, limitations, and. At virtually all of ages, even factoring within the time value regarding money, the younger you happen to be when they choose LTC insurance, the lower the premium could be on both a good annual and cumulative grounds.

The first kind of Long Term Care insurance plan is the Reimbursement Auto insurance policy. A Long-term care insurance coverage provides protection for your policyholder?s independence together with his assets if your health crisis takes place. The customer can take the main advantage of the long-term care plans that provde the complete home health-related where it will pay for 100% of ones daily or once a month benefit amount. In theory, the purpose of an group plan will be to spread the danger of claims on the wider crowd and to protect savings typically plausible when more everyone is buying coverage. Someone living that has a long term care and attention insurance need could feel embarrassed at the very thought of burdening their friends and family. The chance saving a few dollars is not really worth risking the whole future.

It is recommended to buy long term care insurance if you find yourself in your the middle of to late fifties. One person can only need stand-by assistance when they walks, or dresses theirselves, to ensure that your patient doesn?t show up. Some products also contain a long term care/nursing house rider built-in that is definitely helpful. A consumer could possibly, for example, choose a bill limited benefit upon an LTC policy designed to provide benefits for your specified period of time to a place cash long term care insurance minimize. However, the insurance offers you varied plans starting from 2, 3, 4, 5, or unlimited decades. There are some other considerations outlined afterward.

Home Medical Rider: Offers a 0 % day elimination with regard to care provided at your house. Transferring such as getting up, moving into some chair etc. A policy that covers 5 years will save you between 16% in addition to 27% yearly as compared with an unlimited (also called as a lifetime) help. The only open public program that covers long term proper care is Medicaid, and coverage is not really automatic, one has to receive Medicaid based upon true financial want.

Unfortunately, private health insurance coverage and Medicare won?t cover long-term custodial care. This is any segment of insuring which could prove quite lucrative for the savvy agent. Some insurers will indicate inside of a buyer?s policy who failure to go independently shall be considered him for LTC but if only the job he would always have entails 24-hour wandering. What you?ll need to do is to film thru the web sites of different websites and accumulate california permanent care insurance loan quotes; after this may buy.

The LTCI program approach also facilitates the below benchmark rates. The Deficit long term care insurance Decrease Act of 2005 stiffened loopholes that allowed visitors to transfer assets with their children just for them to qualify for Medicaid features. So, for example, coverage could give $200 of benefits daily for five many years. The risk billiards was funded through the insurance companies in addition to member premiums.

Off the Beam: Did a U.S. Radar Research Station Disable Russia's Phobos Probe?

News | Technology

Soon after the ill-fated PhobosGrunt spacecraft stalled in Earth orbit, a former Russian official implicated "powerful American radars" in Alaska. Is there a basis to the claim, or is it just scapegoating?

atmosphere, satellite, space, marsHF ANTENNA ARRAY: A retired commander of Russia's ballistic missile early warning system implied that the U.S.'s High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) observatory in Alaska interfered with the Mars-bound Phobos-Grunt probe. HAARP is often a target of conspiracy theorists. Image: Courtesy of the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP)

After 19 attempts over 51 years, Russia has yet to chalk up a fully successful mission to Mars. That includes its ambitious Phobos?Grunt probe, launched November 8 from Kazakhstan and now stranded in low Earth orbit. Unable to regain control of the spacecraft, the Russians now expect it to fall back to Earth around January 9.

Responding to shame over the nation's Mars program, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has threatened to criminally prosecute those responsible if possible. Soon after Medvedev's comments, a former high-ranking Russian officer found a more convenient scapegoat in a remote Alaskan radar facility. But an analysis of the timing and physics involved shows that there is little basis for the claim.

Phobos?Grunt was to retrieve soil ("grunt" in Russian) from the Martian moon Phobos and return it to Earth for study. But the rocket engine intended to boost the spacecraft into a higher orbit failed. The probe itself has since communicated only sporadically with ground stations, and even then it has murmured only unintelligible noise.

To Lt. Gen. Nikolay Rodionov, a retired commander of Russia's ballistic missile early warning system, U.S. technology could have caused the rocket malfunction. In a November 24 interview with the Russian news agency Interfax, Rodionov said "powerful American radars" in Alaska "could have influenced the control systems of our interplanetary rover."

Rodionov was quoted saying the U.S. wants to use the ionosphere as part of its missile defense, although he did not elaborate. A subsequent article in India's The Hindu expanded on Rodionov's statement, indicating that he was likely referring to the U.S.'s High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) observatory established in 1993.

The HAARP research station sits on an Air Force?owned site in Gakona, Alaska, and falls under the aegis of a number of federal and state agencies, primarily the Air Force Research Laboratory's Space Vehicles Directorate. HAARP scientists have developed the project and the site's instrumentation with help from several U.S. universities and educational institutions?in particular, the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

HAARP performs active and passive radar experiments on the ionosphere, a layer of charged particles stretching from 50 to 1,000 kilometers above Earth. The main goal is to better understand the layer, which has been used almost since the invention of radio to bounce signals far past the horizon, extending a signal's range. The ionosphere does not always reflect signals in a predictable manner, however, which makes it a bit of a gamble for those wanting to use it to communicate critical information. Increasing, standardizing or augmenting that effect could have potent commercial and military applications, such as potentially using reflected signals to probe underground or underwater and even to communicate with submarines.

Given HAARP's main goal of studying how signals are reflected, in the hopes of improving long-range communications, the station fires a radar beam to excite a localized patch of the ionosphere and uses passive devices in Gakona and elsewhere to examine the effects. HAARP scientists essentially are examining the resonant interaction between the radio waves and charged particles. HAARP "is like sticking your finger in a river, and by watching the water flow around your finger you can learn things about the river," such as its flow speed and its temperature, says Morris Cohen, a research scientist at Stanford University whose Ph.D. thesis was about HAARP experiments.

Whereas similar radar facilities exist in Norway, Russia, Peru and other locations, HAARP is one of the most powerful. Its Ionospheric Research Instrument (IRI) puts out a maximum of 3.6 megawatts sending signals at 2.8 to 10 MHz?powerful enough heat up a small (on a global scale) but measurable part of the ionosphere. The energy being added to the area can be measured in several ways, including gauging how much the section expands when it is heated and how it glows. Both effects are incredibly subtle, requiring highly sensitive equipment to record it, and they're orders of magnitude less powerful than the effects of ordinary solar weather that constantly bombards the ionosphere.

But is the transmitter powerful enough to have fried the electronics of Russia's Mars mission?

Sony Reader WiFi officially drops to $129.99

Love 'em or hate 'em, one thing's for sure -- e-readers just keep getting cheaper. The latest to see a dip in price is the Sony Reader WiFi, which debuted at $149.99 just a couple of months back, but has now received a permanent drop to $129.99. What's more, Sony is also running a trade-in program through the end of December that will give you an additional $50 off if you turn in any old e-reader. Not quite the instant discount that an ad-supported Kindle gives you, but certainly not a bad deal if you're looking to upgrade from an older model.
