Warning: Don't Drink and Internet

You don't drink and drive. That's a stupid, terrible thing to do, with a simple, understood cause and effect. So why do we keep waking up, wondering how on earth that drunken Facebook message seemed like a good idea, and oh my god, Amazon confirmed shipment for WHAT? We've outgrown the drunk dial or drunk text. And oh, the chaos we've drunkenly stumbled into now.

In a way, your computer is the most dangerous thing in your house, because it does everything. You have access to essentially every form of social and financial mechanism in your life. Shopping accounts, banking accounts, Facebook friendships with your boss and her husband, butterfinger-deletable archives of every photograph of your children. All of that stuff is vulnerable to your Scotch-soaked brain. If you make bad decisions when you're drunk, well, the internet is the place where literally every decision is possible.

And every decision you make while drunk is worse, too. That might sound like a truism, but it's true of alcohol in a way it isn't for other narcotics. "Substances such as cocaine and LSD work like pharmacological scalpels, altering the functioning of only one or a handful of brain circuits," Stephen Braun writes in Buzz: The Science and Lore of Alcohol and Caffeine. "Alcohol is more like a pharmacological hand grenade. It affects practically everything around it." Alcohol affects your entire brain. Your entire brain is dumber when you're drunk.

So what does a drunk do with the world at his fingertips? Terrible things. Things like

Buy All of the Things

Everyone's a drunk internet shopper. A quick survey around Gawker HQ confirms this. Shoes were the most popular item we heard, with Jezebel's Katie JM Baker alerted by email one bleary morning that she'd lost a bid on an expensive pair of sequined sneakers, even though she does not wear sneakers. It gets worse, though. "I'm a really terrible drunk shopper. I once bought a plane ticket. I signed up for improv classes. I bought a weird hanging wall decoration," Gawker's Leah Beckmann confesses. "It was all the same summer, after a break-up. Lots of weird purchases and lots of drinking."

And that's just financial. While you might rack up some worrisome debt while drunk, your bank account will heal, eventually, probably. Your dignity might not. Definitely stay the hell off of Facebook. Even while sober, you're probably an awkward mess on there. But drunk, inhibitions to the wind? Good god, the possibilities.

Social Destruction

"Man, this is sad, but I have a friend who died a couple years back," Leslie Horn's story begins, ominously. "And one night I was drunk and [Facebook] messaged one of his good friends?he was cute?that I only vaguely knew. Just like, Hi whatever this is a weird thing to be going through. He never wrote back. It was just random, drunken, late night Facebook condolences, more or less, but I don't know, sometimes that leads to banging. I've done so much dumb shit on Facebook when drunk."

Or maybe you share something you shouldn't. "I accidentally got two cops fired," says our editorial assistant Ashley Feinberg. "It was freshman year of college, and we were in my room drinking, and one of my friends accidentally broke the window. So the RA had to call the campus police because I guess that is window breaking protocol. And things were a little tense so I started asking them about their utility belts, which turned into a bunch of fun pictures of them handcuffing me, playing with the night stick, etc. I then decided would be a good idea to put these very obviously not OK photos on Facebook at 3am. It was not. I got a call from the chief of security the next day and had to come in to his office and he'd printed out all the pictures and blown them up and kept asking me if I'd been coerced. They were in both color and black and white, for some reason. I had to go through and explain what was happening in each one, regardless of me assuring him that I had been handcuffed willingly. Apparently that is still a big no-no for cops and they soon were no longer employed there."

Those are uniquely Facebook phenomena, catching some hot guy or girl you only tangentially know and firing off a winky face or sharing bad-idea photos. But the internet also raises the stakes for time-honored bad decisions as well.

The Sex Stuff

You have more ways to just go for broke, like the irrepressible Sam Biddle. "I got naked and Facetimed an ex-girlfriend last year. I think I was pretty hammered." She was an ex at the time? And did she, um, know that you would be naked? "Yeah, she was an ex. And well, we were sexting. She knew. I'll just leave it at that."

And then there are times where simply having access to the wider world of the web will get drunken, idiot you into situations that, while not strictly online, are made possible by it. Like total and irredeemable social immolation:

"I'm pretty good with electronics when I'm drunk," Deadspin's Greg Howard says, "But my best friend went to Brazil with me a few years ago. It was our whole soccer team. We got fucked up the last night?we were all browned out essentially?and he said he had to take a shit. He just up and disappeared. We went looking for him the next day, and the whole team found him passed out on the toilet with his laptop out. He'd shat in the toilet, and he had a porn site up with four RedTube videos loaded?for seamless switching I guess?passed out with his dick in his hand. It was pretty sickening, really."

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why drunk internet is bad internet. Be safe out there.

Insert Coin Meta 1 marries 3D glasses and motion sensor for gesturecontrolled AR

Now that Google Glass and Oculus Rift have entered the zeitgeist, might we start to see VR and AR products popping up on every street corner? Perhaps, but Meta has just launched an interesting take on the concept by marrying see-through, stereoscopic, display glasses with a Kinect-style depth sensor. That opens up the possibility of putting virtual objects into the real world, letting you "pick up" a computer-generated 3D architectural model and spin it around in your hand, for instance, or gesture to control a virtual display appearing on an actual wall. To make it work, you connect a Windows PC to the device, which consists of a pair of 960 x 540 Epson displays embedded in the transparent glasses (with a detachable shade, as shown in the prototype above), and a depth sensor attached to the top. That lets the Meta 1 track your gestures, individual fingers and walls or other physical surfaces, all of which are processed in the PC with motion tracking tech to give the illusion of virtual objects anchored to the real world.

Apps can be created via Unity3D and an included SDK on Windows computers (other platforms will arrive later, according to the team), with developers able to publish their apps on the upcoming Meta Store. The group has launched the project on Kickstarter with the goal of raising $100,000 to get developer kits into the hands of app coders, and though it's no Google, Meta is a Y Combinator startup and has several high-profile researchers on the team. As such, it's asking for exactly half of Glass' Explorer Edition price as a minimum pledge to get in on the ground floor: $750. Once developers have had their turn, the company will turn its attention toward consumers and more sophisticated designs -- so if you like the ideas peddled in the video, hit the source to give them your money.

Brain makes call on which ear is used for cell phone

May 16, 2013 ? If you're a left-brain thinker, chances are you use your right hand to hold your cell phone up to your right ear, according to a newly published study from Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

The study -- to appear online in JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery -- shows a strong correlation between brain dominance and the ear used to listen to a cell phone. More than 70% of participants held their cell phone up to the ear on the same side as their dominant hand, the study finds.

Left-brain dominant people -- who account for about 95% of the population and have their speech and language center located on the left side of the brain -- are more likely to use their right hand for writing and other everyday tasks.

Likewise, the Henry Ford study reveals most left-brain dominant people also use the phone in their right ear, despite there being no perceived difference in their hearing in the left or right ear. And, right-brain dominant people are more likely to use their left hand to hold the phone in their left ear.

"Our findings have several implications, especially for mapping the language center of the brain," says Michael Seidman, M.D., FACS, director of the division of otologic and neurotologic surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Henry Ford.

"By establishing a correlation between cerebral dominance and sidedness of cell phone use, it may be possible to develop a less-invasive, lower-cost option to establish the side of the brain where speech and language occurs rather than the Wada test, a procedure that injects an anesthetic into the carotid artery to put part of the brain to sleep in order to map activity."

He notes that the study also may offer additional evidence that cell phone use and tumors of the brain, head and neck may not necessarily be linked.

Since nearly 80% of people use the cell phone in their right ear, he says if there were a strong connection there would be far more people diagnosed with cancer on the right side of their brain, head and neck, the dominant side for cell phone use. It's likely, he says, that the development of tumors is more "dose-dependent" based on cell phone usage.

The study began with the simple observation that most people use their right hand to hold a cell phone to their right ear. This practice, Dr. Seidman says, is illogical since it is challenging to listen on the phone with the right ear and take notes with the right hand.

To determine if there is an association between sidedness of cell phone use and auditory or language hemispheric dominance, the Henry Ford team developed an online survey using modifications of the Edinburgh Handedness protocol, a tool used for more than 40 years to assess handedness and predict cerebral dominance.

The survey included questions about which hand was used for tasks such as writing; time spent talking on cell phone; whether the right or left ear is used to listen to phone conversations; and if respondents had been diagnosed with a brain or head and neck tumor.

It was distributed to 5,000 individuals who were either with an otology online group or a patient undergoing Wada and MRI for non-invasive localization purposes.

On average, respondents' cell phone usage was 540 minutes per month. The majority of respondents (90%) were right handed, 9% were left handed and 1% was ambidextrous.

Among those who are right handed, 68% reported that they hold the phone to their right ear, while 25% used the left ear and 7% used both right and left ears. For those who are left handed, 72% said they used their left ear for cell phone conversations, while 23% used their right ear and 5% had no preference.

The study also revealed that having a hearing difference can impact ear preference for cell phone use.

In all, the study found that there is a correlation between brain dominance and laterality of cell phone use, and there is a significantly higher probability of using the dominant hand side ear.

Studies are underway to look at tumor registry banks of patients with head, neck and brain cancer to evaluate cell phone usage. Controversy still exists around a potential association of cell phone use and tumors. Until this is fully understood, Dr. Seidman advises using hands-free modes for calls rather than holding a phone up to the side of the head.

Buffett's firm reveals new stock investments and divestments

Filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission revealed recent investment decisions made by Berkshire Hathaway, the investment group led by Warren Buffett. In addition to buying and selling stocks in its $85 billion U.S. stock portfolio, the company owns 80 other companies, some of which account for more than half its income.

Berkshire Hathaway also made several other adjustments to its $85 billion U.S. stock portfolio during the first quarter. The changes were disclosed in documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

At the end of March, Berkshire held 6.5 million shares of engineering and construction firm Chicago Bridge & Iron that focuses on energy projects and 5.6 million shares of movie network Starz.

Berkshire's investments are closely watched because many people try to copy?Buffett's?moves. But because many of the firm's latest investments are smaller than $500 million, they were likely the work of Berkshire's two other investment managers.

The quarterly stock filing doesn't say who made each investment decision. Todd Combs and Ted Weschler are each managing portfolios worth about $5 billion for Berkshire while?Buffett?continues to make most of the investment decisions for the Omaha, Nebraska-based conglomerate.

Berkshire officials do not routinely comment on these required disclosures, and no one responded immediately to a message about it on Wednesday afternoon.

Berkshire cut its Mondelez stake to 7 million shares from 12.8 million at the end of 2012. It also trimmed its Kraft Foods investment slightly to 1.6 million shares from 1.67 million shares.

Berkshire's new CB&I investment complements several other energy industry investments in the portfolio. Berkshire bought more shares of National Oilwell Varco Inc. to give it 7.5 million shares and maintained its investments in Phillips 66 and ConocoPhillips.

Berkshire also bought more stock in one of?Buffett's?favorite banks, Wells Fargo & Co. Berkshire owns 458.2 million Wells Fargo shares, up from 439.9 million. And Berkshire invested in Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to give it 49.2 million shares at the end of March, up from 47.5 million.

Buffett's?company increased its investment in Internet registry service VeriSign Inc. to 8.2 million shares from the 3.7 million it held at year-end.

Berkshire eliminated two smaller investments in Archer Daniels Midland Co. and General Dynamics Corp. that were in its portfolio at the end of 2012. It also reduced its stake in the Bank of New York Mellon to 18.9 million shares from 19.6 million.

Besides investments, Berkshire owns more than 80 companies; including insurance, utility, railroad, furniture, jewelry, manufacturing, restaurant and apparel companies. Berkshire's insurance and utility businesses typically account for more than half of his company's net income.

The governor of Wisconsin wants to give his residents a tax break, using the revenue from a proposed Internet Sales tax to lower the state’s income tax. “I want to make clear, should federal Marketplace legislation become law, my intention would be for any resulting additional revenue be used to provide individual income tax relief for Wisconsin?s taxpayers,” Wrote Governor Scott Walker to members of Congress. The Marketplace Fairness Act will permit state governments to collect sales taxes from any business that both grosses more than $1M in revenue and has a substantial operating base in their region. Earlier this month, a draft of the bill?passed the U.S. Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support, but faces tougher opposition in the House, where Republican leadership is concerned that the law will be a logistical nightmare for small businesses. Although, I wouldn’t get too excited. With 5 million residents in Wisconsin and an estimated $95M in savings, that’s about $16/per person, assuming it would be distributed evenly. If Forrester’s research is any indication, the sales tax would?cost?the average American roughly $167 per year, so it’s a net loss. If it’s unevenly distributed, a few already wealthy people will be slightly wealthier. Still, it’s a nice gesture.

Nanomaterials exhibit unique properties that can only unfold when the structures of the material are very small that is, at the nanoscale. In order to exploit these special properties such as, for example, specific quantum effects it is very important to produce predefined nanostructures in a controlled way and interpret the formation of their shape. Scientists try to understand how to initiate and control the growth of nanomaterials and are exploring different ways to design and build up nanostructures with fine control over shapes. In nature, many organic forms grow bilaterally, that is, symmetrically in two distinct directions. An international team of researchers from the University of Vienna (Austria), the University of Surrey (UK) and the IFW Dresden (Germany) have now achieved such a bilateral formation of inorganic nanomaterials in a controlled environment by implementing a new method.

How to grow a nanomoustache

The scientists pressurized a gas consisting of carbon and iron atoms at an elevated temperature until they observed two arms of carbon atoms spontaneously started growing out of an iron core. When the iron core was small enough, the two carbon arms started spiraling at their ends so that the whole nanostructure bore a striking resemblance with a twirled moustache. "The encouraging insights we gained from our experiments provide a very good starting point for the controlled production of extraordinary new materials with designed nanostructures", expects Dr. Hidetsugu Shiozawa, leading author of the scientific publication and researcher at the Faculty of Physics at the University of Vienna.

Useful imperfections

In order to find out more about the internal architecture of the nanomoustaches, the researchers cut their nanomaterial into extremely thin slices and used a special microscopy technique the transmission electron microscopy to have a closer look at the slices. When nanostructures grow, structural imperfections of the material emerge that are characteristic for the way the material was formed. In the observed herringbone pattern of the sliced nanomoustache, the distribution of the structural imperfections allowed the scientists to look back in time and extract further information about the formation of the nanomaterial. For future applications it will be fundamental to apply their knowledge to the growth of nanostructures in 2 or 3 dimensions in order to build regular patterns and networks at the nanoscale. Therefore, the scientists strive to understand even more about the mechanism behind the formation pattern of the nanomoustaches and are aiming at growing more dimensional and more complex nanostructures in future research projects.
